국문 초록

본 연구는 ‘내성적 유아’에 대한 인식에서 성별에 따른 차이에 주목하고, 실제로 ‘내성적인’ 남아들에게서 문제시 되어지는 사회적 특성들이 또래놀이와 관계 내에서 어떠한 역할을 하는지 면밀히 살펴봄으로써, 사회성과 관련된 성규범적 문화신념과 가치들에 대하여 비판적 관점에서 재고해보고자 하였다. 미국 동남부의 한 어린이집 에서의 만4세 유아반의 담임교사와 유아들, 특히 내성적인 이유로 사회성이 부족하 다고 여겨졌던 2명의 남아를 관심유아로 선정하여 2011년 12월부터 2012년 8월까지 참여관찰과 면담을 주 자료수집 방법으로 비판적 문화기술지 연구를 수행하였다. 본연구를 통해 ‘내성적인’ 남아들의 “약한 자기주장성”과 “여린 민감성”과 같은 사회적 특성들이 ‘내성적인’ 여아에 비해 더욱 문제시되어지며, 이를 극복하도록 조력하는 담임교사의 교수적인 접근들이 일상에서 종종 이루어짐을 발견하였다. 하지만, 또래 와의 놀이에서 ‘내성적인’ 남아들의 이와 같은 특성들은 놀이에서의 갈등을 줄이고, 또래들과의 관계에서 상호간의 어울림과 공존을 조화롭게 생성하고 유지하는데 중요한 역할을 하였다. 즉, ‘내성적인’ 남아에 대한 사회의 부정적인 함축은 성규범적 문화신념과 가치가 내포된 것으로, 반성적 그리고 비판적인 검토가 요구됨을 제안하 였다. « 주

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate gendered aspects of conceptualizing children s social competence, that is, the relationships between social and cultural gender norms and the recognition of young children s social competence. Particularly, focusing on the cultural beliefs and values that are placed on the introverted boys, this study tried to understand what social features were concerned regarding introverted boys and how these features actually worked within the children s peer culture. Through this critical ethnography study, the research challenged and critically reconsidered any negative connotations that were attached to the image of introverted boys by the community s cultural beliefs. First, by comparing and contrasting the participant teacher s descriptions on introverted children, two boys and one girl, this study found introverted boys unassertiveness and excessive sensitivity were more likely regarded as problematic than girls. The teacher s educational interventions for these social characteristics were also frequently observed. Second, despite such negative connotations in society, these features that the introverted boys manifested in peer play were actually very beneficial for the children s relationships. The boys sensitivities and unassertive attitudes were not only helpful for reducing the number of conflicts that can occur during peer play but also indispensible for generating and enhancing harmonies in peer relationships and peaceful peer interactions. This study calls for critical reflection on and reconsideration of our cultural values and beliefs regarding gender-specific types of social competence.
