사교육이 고등학생의 수학학업성취도에 미치는 영향 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 사교육 참여 여부와 학생 수준, 학교 수준의 요인이 수학학업성취도에 미치는 영향에 대하여 분석하는데 목적이 있다. 분석을 위하여 서울교육종단연구 (Seoul Education Longitudinal Study: SELS) 초4패널, 7차년도 자료(고등학교 1학년, 2016년)를 활용하였다. 사교육 참여 효과의 보다 면밀한 연구를 위하여 사교육과 수학학업성취도에 영향을 미치는 변인으로 기대되는 변인을 공변인으로 투입하고 경향점수매칭을 실시하여 사교육 참여집단과 미참여집단 간 동등성을 확보하였다. 수학학업성취도에 영향을 미치는 학생 수준, 학교 수준의 변인을 탐색하기 위하여 다층모형을 적용하여 분석하였다. 분석결과에 따르면, 학생 수준의 변인 중 학습태도가 좋을수록, 가정 변인 중 부모의 월수입이 높을수록 수학학업성취도와 정적인 관계가 있는 것으로 나타났으며, 사교육 참여 여부 효과를 통제한 후에 사교육 참여여부는 수학학업성취도에 유의한 영향을 미치지 않았으나 방과후 학교와 EBS 참여여부는 정적으로 유의한 영향을 미쳤다. 학교 수준의 변인 중 학생이 재학한 학교가 수준별 이동수업을 실시할수록, 기초학력미달 수학 학생 비율이 높을수록 수학학업 성취도와 부적인 관계가 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과를 토대로 연구의 시사점을 논의 하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to explore how participation in private tutoring, the student-level and school-level predictors affect on academic achievement of mathematics. For this study, the 7-wave(first grade of academic high school) of the Seoul Education Longitudinal Study(SELS) dataset was used. To eliminate selection biases, propensity scores matching between the participation(private tutoring, treated) group and non-participation(control) group was conducted. Variables which were expected to be influential factors on private tutoring and academic achivement on mathematics, were modeled as covariate variables. Using the propensity score matching method, the homogeneity between the two groups was secured. As a result of the multilevel modeling using homogeneous data, the participation in private tutoring did not have a statistically significant effect on academic achievement on mathematics. On the other hand, the participation of after-school and EBS programs had a significant effect on academic achievement of mathematics. Among student-level variables, the learning attitude and household’s monthly income were positively related to academic achievement of mathematics. Among school-level predictors, the ability grouping on mathematics achievement and the ratio of students who have below-basic academic proficiency level were negatively related to academic achievement of mathematics. Based on these results, the implications of this study were discussed.
