The field of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) is a huge market in Korea, and the current government administration of President Lee Myung-park wants to promote the acquisition of English even more. There are several government programs that have been initiated to recruit Native language instructors to teach in Korea since 1992 when communicative competency was seen as a teaching methodology to be promoted over the previously taught grammar-based approach. In order for these Native English instructors to teach in Korea and acquire the proper E-2 visa, the official "language instructor" visa, they must come from one of six countries: New Zealand, Australia, United Kingdom, The United States, Canada, or South Africa. In coming to Korea to teach English unofficially they immediately become "cultural ambassadors" for their country and teach much more than the mere language for which they are being employed. The Communicative competency approach to language teaching brings with it culturally embedded structures of meaning that go beyond the linguistic range of communication. Cultural Tourism of the EFL instructors' home country is promoted indirectly through their presence both in and out of the classroom. After living in Korea for several years though, what are the attitudes and nuances that EFL instructors continue to promote? In this study, four in-depth interviews with EFL instructors reflect on their teaching style, perception of cultural representation, and their perceived changes over the years of teaching EFL in Korea. Can they still effectively promote the cultural image of their country and do they still consider themselves to be cultural ambassadors?
