영문 초록

Dark tourism, or also known as thanatourism, is a type of tourism which is wholly or partially related to every dark side of human nature. Previously, it was categorized into various different dimensions on the basis of tourist motivations and suppliers. Although dark tourism sites generally includes a dark side of human aspects such as disease, death, sadness, disaster, misfortune, and tragedy, many of them have been increasingly recognized as one of the reasonable tourism resources, which have high potentials to attract tourists' interests. This study proposes a theoretical framework of understanding the potentials of dark tourism by analyzing factors influencing tourist behavior. The cases are selected based on the representative tragedies happened in Asia-Pacific region, which exemplify different types of dark tourism in the region. A meaningful implication on marketing and tourism development will be provided through rigorous scrutiny on the selected dark tourism cases in the Asia-Pacific region. The result will shed a light to understand and manage dark tourism sites and resources as new potential tourism resources.
