카뮈의 『이방인』, 내부로부터의 탈식민주의

국문 초록

『이방인』은 주로 실존주의와 부조리의 관점에서 작품의 독해가 이루어져 왔다. 이 연구는 인문교양교육이 나아갈 길을 고민하고 모색하는 과정에서 학생들이 텍스트를 다양한 관점으로 읽어내는 능력을 통해 창의적 사고와 소통능력을 기르고 다양한 견해를 이해하며 생각의 근육을 키울 수 있다는 점에 주목하였다. 본 연구는 이방인-타자에 대한 사유를 통해 서구와 비서구, 문명과 야만, 남성과 여성, 주체와 타자 등의 대립 양상을 살펴나간다. 스스로 타자를 자처한 뫼르소는 식민지인들을 타자의 타자로 파악하고 지배이데올로기의 대리자로서 제국과 식민지 사이의 불평등한 관계의 단면을 드러낸다. 뫼르소와 그의 친구들 또한 알제리에서 작동하는 프랑스의 존재를 대신한다. 『이방인』에서 뫼르소는 많은 부분 카뮈의 가치관을 대신하고 있다. 이러한 태도는 프랑스 우선권에 대한 확신을 전복시키는 여러 사건에 직면하게 된다. 이 연구는 다르게 읽기 전략을 통해 『이방인』을 작가 카뮈의 의도와 전혀 다른 관점에서 접근하는데 의의를 둔다.

영문 초록

The Stranger by Camus has been read mainly from the perspective of existentialism and irrationality. In the process of having contemplation and searching a future path for humanities and liberal arts education, this study focused on an idea that students would be able to cultivate their creative thinking and communication skills, understand a range of opinions, and increase their muscles of thinking through the ability of reading a text from various perspectives. The present study investigated confrontation patterns between West and non-West, civilization and barbarism, men and women, and subjects and others through the thinking of strangers-others. Calling himself a member of others, Meursault understands people in the colony as others of others and reveals an aspect of unequal relations between the empire and the colony as an agent of the ruling ideology. His friends as well as he replace the presence of France operating in Algeria. In The Stranger, Meursault represents Camus’ values in many parts. This attitude faces several events to overturn his conviction in the priority of France. The present study made an approach to The Stranger in a completely different direction from Camus’ intention through the strategy of reading differently, thus holding its significance
