국문 초록

본 연구에서는 CCTV로 기록된 영상을 파운드 푸티지로 미디어아트에 활용한 5명의 작품을 ‘감시사회’에 초점을 맞추어 분석하고, CCTV의 안전 기능과 프라이버시권의 갈등에 대해 검토해보았다. 나우먼, 클라이어, 룩스의 작품을 통해서 감시사회에 살고 있는 사람들은 세상이 아무리 넓어도 좁은 통로에서 살고 있는 것과 다름없으며, 개인을 감시하는 권력은 거인과 같고 감시당하는 개인은 소인처럼 위축되고, 언제 어디서나 감시의 눈길을 의식할 수밖에 없는 삶을 살고 있다는 메시지를 읽을 수 있었다. 쉬빙과 한경우의 작품을 통해서는 CCTV의 렌즈가 개인을 지켜보는 ‘눈’이나 다름없는데 그 ‘눈’은 감시의 눈일 수도 있고, 세상을 살아갈 수 있게 지켜주는 눈일 수도 있는 다중성의 메시지, 그리고 실시간으로 송출되는 영상도 얼마든지 왜곡되어 중립적이라고 확신할 수 없다는 메시지를 읽을 수 있었다. 이러한 메시지를 바탕으로 현재 일어나고 있는 CCTV의 안전 기능과 프라이버시 침해라는 갈등을 검토하고, 이러한 갈등의 해법이 될 수 있는 담론 형성에 동참하는 파운드 푸티지 작품들이 발표되기를 희망해 보았다.

영문 초록

This study analyzed the works of five people who used Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) recorded images in media art as found footage, focusing on the “surveillance society”. Further, it reviewed the conflict between the safety function of CCTV and the right to privacy. The conclusions of this study, based on the analysis of the works of Bruce Nauman, Michael Klier, Manu Luksch, ​​are as follows. People who live in a surveillance society, no matter how vast the world is, experience life as if they were living in a narrow corridor. Moreover, the power to monitor individuals resembles a giant, and the individuals being watched are made to feel vulnerable. Finally, people are living a life devoid of choices besides being constantly aware of the eye of surveillance. Through the analysis of the works of Xu Bing and Han Kyung-woo, the following message can be grasped: the CCTV lens is akin to an “eye” that observes the individual. Dragonfly eyes have multiple meanings, as they can be interpreted as the eyes that monitor or protect people. Additionally, live videos can also be distorted, which hinders the confidence in their neutrality. Based on the messages from the artists, the conflicts that were occurring in CCTV’s safety functions and privacy violations were reviewed. Further, it is hoped that found footage works will join the formation of discourse and serve as a solution to these conflicts.
