프로이트의 『토템과 터부』에 나타난 정신분석의 과학적 신화론

국문 초록

본 논문은 프로이트의 정신분석학을 성욕 중심적 이론으로 폄하하는 일상적 비판에 맞서, 정신분석은 의식과 무의식의 변증법을 도모하는 과학적 신화론이라는 사실을 설명하고자 기획되었다. 이를 위해, 프로이트가 신화와 과학의 융합을 꾀한 『토템과 터부』를 중심으로 프로이트의 정신분석학이 과학과 신화라는 두 축 사이에서 어떤 방식으로 치유의 길을 찾아왔는지 살펴본다. 『토템과 터부』에 나타나듯, 프로이트는 과학과 신화가 상호 견제하는 방식으로 정신분석학의 새로운 길을 열었다. 즉 그는 정신분석학을 과학적 치유론으로 구축하면서도, 해부학적 지식 너머에서 발현되는 증상을 생리적 구조보다는 심리적 현실로 이해함으로써 과학 너머의 영역을 받아들였고, 무의식을 신화적 영역으로 설명하면서도, 융적인 방식의 순환적 신화론은 비판했다. 그는 ‘유전’이 히스테리의 원인이라는 샤르코의 견해에 맞서, 유전이라는 과학을 넘어 히스테리 병인론을 연구했으나, 동시에 원형이라는 신화적 토대를 거부하기 위해 다윈의 과학을 선택했다. 이 과정 속에서 프로이트는 다윈의 유전학에 치우치지 않고 프레이저의 신화론에 근거하지도 않는 새로운 길을 모색했다. 논문은 선형적 신화론 속에서 프로이트가 펼치는 새로운 치유론을 ‘과학적 신화론’이라고 명명한다. 이와 같이 토템과 터부 는 프로이트가 프레이저와 다윈 사이에서 어떻게 신화와 유전학에 거리를 두며, 동시에 신화와 과학을 활용하고 있는가를 보여주는 매우 정교한 지도이다.

영문 초록

This paper aims at demonstrating Freud’s elaboration of scientific mythology in Totem and Taboo. As shown in this paper, Freud draws upon Darwin in order to utilize the scientific form that will enable him to resist the mythological premise of circular repetition, and he leans on Frazer to distance himself from the Darwinian perspective of genetics which can offer an ultimate solution to the aetiology of Hysteia. Freud wanted to grasp the ineffable element that makes human beings who they are, yet he resists the idea that human beings are inherited with common memories and mythical forms. Thus, he manages to elaborate a theme in which the species of human beings is separated from the path of the apes, and humans start their lives where there is nothing except their own experiences. Even though they have inherited nothing but the space of the unconscious, which is the void itself, at the beginning, the dialectical process of the integration of the conscious and the unconscious creates all the mysteries of human lives. The cure for psychological problems and symptoms can be found not in the innate forms but in one’s experiences, or within the relationships with fellow human beings. It is Freud’s way of exploring the moment of enlightenment that brings about the major change in the evolution of human beings, the knowledge of which is at the very core of the process of becoming a healthy individual. Patricide thus refers to the individual’s act of resisting all external powers that repress one’s desire and of asserting what he or she wants. This paper terms the therapeutic direction of psychoanalysis which Freud demonstrated in Totem and Taboo ‘Scientific Mythology.’
