소설 『파라다이스』의 디아스포라와 불가시성

국문 초록

글은 『『파라다이스』』에서 드러난 디아스포라의 유형과 순수 · 혼종의 아이러니를 먼저 분석하고, 그다음으로 인종(종교, 젠더)에 의한 불가시성의 문제와 이를 극복하는 방안을 모색하였다. 또 맥락이나 필요에 따라 모리슨의 3부작 빌러비드와 재즈 , 『파라다이스』 를 상호텍스트성의 관점으로 추론하였다. 이 과정에서 백인의 주류 문화 속에서 전복적인 글쓰기 양식, 즉 흑인의 침범 문화(필드 홀러, 영가, 가스펠, 블루스 등 음악) 형식이 등장하는 것을 발견하였다. 『파라다이스』 의 디아스포라에는 순수성과 혼종성이 이주 경험의 특정 면모로서 대조를 이룬다. 8-R의 순수성은 일종의 강박 관념이다. 디아스포라인은 순수성을 유지할 수 없는 운명을 지녔다. 아무리 순수한 혈통을 고수하려고 노력해도, 디아스포라인의 자의식 형성에는 호스트와의 상호성을 통하여 지배 이데올로기와 주류문화를 은밀히 수용(융합)하는 과정을 거치게 된다. 또 아프리카의 음악성(‘부름-응답’과 ‘링 샤우트’의 형식)을 이식하여 영가와 가스펠, 재즈, 블루스를 불러도 거기엔 주류 음악과의 부단한 절충이 불가피하다. 『파라다이스』 의 불가시성은 상호성 부재에서 비롯된다. 8-R은 백인과 혼혈에 의한 타자화로 인하여 순수성에 집착하게 되지만, 집단 정체의 폐쇄성은 내부 분열과 외부 알력을 초래한다. 수녀원은 디아스포라의 의식 개혁으로 문화 혼종성을 지향하지만, 개인 정체의 모호성은 내부 혼란과 외부 압력을 유발한다. 『파라다이스』 는 디아스포라의 과정에 흑인 음악의 이산성을 함께 펼쳐 보였다. 이는 아프리카의 이산되는 소리가 문화 혼종성을 지니면서 새로운 음악으로 탄생한다면, 인종(종교, 젠더)에 의한 불가시성을 극복하는 데 큰 힘이 될 것임을 피력한 것이다.

영문 초록

This research paper first analyzed the types of diaspora and the irony of purity and hybridity in Toni Morrison’s novel, Paradise, and then examined the issue of invisibility of race (and religion and gender) and proposed its resolution. It also inferred the intertextuality of Morrison’s trilogy, i.e., Beloved, Jazz, and Paradise, from context and as necessary. From this inference, it found that African Americans’ subversive writing style, i.e., African American rebellious culture (e.g., field holler, spiritual, gospel, and blues, and so on), arose from a reaction to mainstream white American culture. The diaspora in Paradise make a contrast between purity and hybridity as certain aspects of migration. The purity of eight-rocks (“8-R”) was an obsession, and the diaspora are destined to fail to maintain their purity. Even if they attempt to preserve their pure bloodline, the diaspora are bound to unknowingly accept and assimilate some parts of the dominant ideology and mainstream culture through their interaction with white Americans when developing a sense of identity. Although African Americans sing spiritual, gospel, jazz, and blues songs as unique African American music styles (e.g., “call-and-response” and “ring shout”), it is inevitable that these would have been affected by mainstream music. The invisibility in Paradise resulted from the absence of interaction. Eight-rocks were obsessed with purity due to the othering of white Americans and multiracial people, but their exclusivism caused internal conflict and external pressure. The convent pursued ideological reform and consequent cultural hybridity, but the ambiguousness of individual identity caused internal discord and external pressure. Paradise described the dispersiveness of black music together with the diaspora of African Americans. In doing so, Paradise indicates that if dispersive African music develops into new music with cultural hybridity, it can contribute to overcoming the invisibility of race (and religion and gender).
