과학기술 특성화대학 교양교육의 특수성과 발전방안 연구

국문 초록

본 논문에서는, 과학기술 특성화대학이 놓인 사회적 상황을 진단하고, 이들 대학의 교양교육이 향후 나아가야 할 방향과 담당해야 할 과제를 제안하였다. 최근 한국사회가 신자유주의로 급속히 변화해 가면서 과학기술 특성화대학 내에 ‘경제지상주의’, ‘전문지식 지상주의’, ‘직업교육 중시주의’가 강화되고 있다. 그리고 각 대학이 시장 친화적인 기업가적 대학을 추구해 감에 따라 ‘인적 자본’ 양성을 교육목표로 삼고 있다. 이러한 상황 속에서 이들 대학의 교양교육은 정체성의 위기에 직면하게 되었고 인문교육의 비중이 점점 줄어들고 있다. 이제 과학기술 특성화대학은 대학 안팎의 상황에 맹목적으로 추종해서는 안 되며, 보다 비판적이고 창의적인 인재상을 목표로 삼아 교양교육을 더 강화해 내야 한다. 이를 위해 본고는 교양교육 강화의 구체적인 방안으로서 ‘인문학 부전공 과정 개설’, ‘졸업요건으로서의 글쓰기 집중 과정 이수’ 그리고 ‘교육환경 변화에 대한 비판적 대응’을 제안한다. 뿐만 아니라, 5개 과학기술 특성화대학의 교양교육 담당교수들이 교양교육 강화를 위한 공동의 문제를 함께 논의하고 해결하기 위해 정기적인 워크숍을 개최하는 등, 교양교육의 위기에 공동으로 대응해 나가는 것이 중요하다.

영문 초록

This study aims to verify the current status of science and technology universities and address future directions and tasks these universitites should undertake as higher education institutions seeking publicness. In recent times, neoliberalism is spreading rapidly in Korea, while economism, specialism, and vocationalism are being emphasized in science and technology universities. As these universitiesseek to become market friendly, entrepreneurial entities, their primary educational focus is to foster human capital. Under these circumstances, liberal education is facingan identity crisis and the proportion of humanities education courses is gradually decreasing. Universities that specialize in science and technology should not blindly follow the situation inside and outside theircampuses and should further reinforce liberal education with a goal to attract more critical and creative talents. To this end, this study proposes practical courses with expanding online classes (e.g., a minor curriculum for humanities), writing intensive courses, and flipped learning as concrete measures for strengthening liberal education. Moreover, it is important for liberal arts professors at the five science and technology universities to take collective action to tackle the crisis and enhance liberal educationby conducting regular workshops to discuss and resolve common issues.
