국문 초록

이탈리아 대표 신사실주의 작가 바스코 프라톨리니 Vasco Pratolini(1913~1991)는 19세기 말 혼란스러운 유럽의 축소판과 같은 당시 이탈리아의 ‘역사’와 민중들의 삶과 ‘실존’을 ‘문학’을 매개로 증언하였다. 특히 ‘이탈리아 역사 Una storia italiana’라는 삼부작, 『메텔로 Metello』와 『폐허 Lo scialo』, 『우화와 조롱 Allegoria e derisione』을 통해 19세기 말, 20세기 초 격변의 시대를 관통하는 이탈리아의 모습을 그려내었다. 그는 피렌체 하층민 출신으로 작가의 구체적인 경험이 작품이 잘 드러난 자전적 소설을 주로 선보인다. 그중에서도 그의 대표작 『메텔로』(1955)에는 이탈리아 통일 이후 혼란스럽던 피렌체의 모습이 잘 나타나 있다. 『메텔로』는 이탈리아 통일 이후 근대 도시로 변화하는 피렌체의 모습을 농촌 출신의 고아 메텔로라는 인물의 인생을 통해 그려내었다. 메텔로가 일자리를 찾기 위해 피렌체로 이주하여 1875년과 1902년 사이에 사회주의 운동, 파업, 노동운동을 겪는 줄거리로, 역사적 사건들을 관통하는 등장인물들을 통해 사실보다 진실에 가까운 당시의 피렌체의 모습을 담아내었다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 주인공 메텔로의 피렌체에서의 삶을 집중적으로 추적하여 전통적으로 르네상스식 부르주아 문화가 지배적이었던 피렌체에서 어떤 문화적, 정치적, 사회적 변화를 겪게 되었는지 역사연표가 아닌 문학을 매개로 분석하였다.

영문 초록

Pratolini was an iconic Italian neorealist writer who used literature as a medium to testify to the history of Italy during his time a miniature of late 19th century Europe in turmoil and explore the lives and existence of its people. His trilogy “An Italian Story,” comprising Metello, Lo Scialo, and Allegoria e Derisione, provides a glimpse into the unfolding chaos in his country from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. Born into a low class family in Florence, Pratolini mainly penned autobiographical novels in which he incorporated his own experience. Of his works, Metello is recognized as the magnum opus for its vivid portrayal of the tumultuous times in Florence as the city reinvented itself into a modern metropolis in the wake of Italian unification. Metello follows the life of an eponymous orphan brought up in a rural area who moves to Florence seeking employment and experiences socialist movements, strikes, and labor campaigns between 1875 and 1902. Through the perspectives of the characters experiencing the historical events, the novel captures the truth behind the facts as it follows the reality of the city. In light of these considerations, this study discusses Metellos life in Florence to explore the cultural, political, and social changes in Florence, the traditional stronghold of Renaissance era bourgeois culture, from a literary perspective. To better examine the truth behind the facts in Pratolini s work, I place more emphasis on the literary aspects of the story than on the chronological order of the events.
