국문 초록

본 논문은 한류생태학에 대한 이론적 고찰이다. 문화콘텐츠를 포함한 한국의 문물이 국외에서 소비되는 현상을 가리키는 한류는 1990년대 후반 당시 IMF 위기에 처했던 한국 경제와 문화의 새로운 전환점이 되었다. 텔레비전 드라마와 대중음악의 해외 팬덤으로 시작되었던 한류의 범위는 계속 진화하여 관광과 화장품 산업 그리고 외국인 유학생 등 다양한 영역을 포괄하게 되었다. 이제, 보다 전체적이고 다층적인 접근법을 통해 한류를 재검토하고 재이론화 해야 할 시점이다. 게다가 한류가 촉진한 문화산업 내 자본의 집중과 신자유주의적 실천양식은 오늘날 문화란 무엇인가에 대한 논의를 제기한다. 결국 한류의 복잡다기한 생태계와 구조 그리고 그 실천을 이해하기 위해서는 통합적이고 맥락적인 시각으로 생산양식과 수용실천을 분석하고 생산과 수용 간 관계 양상을 변화시키는 기술과 규제를 검토해야 한다. 본 논문은 이와 같은 문제의식을 통해 한류 현상을 통합적으로 이해하고 비판적으로 분석하는 새로운 연구 틀로서 한류생태학을 논의한다.

영문 초록

This study is a theoretical discussion on developing a new research design called Korean Wave Ecology. The Korean Wave (or, Hallyu in Korean) refers to the phenomenon in which Korean culture and objects are popularly consumed in foreign countries. When it initiated in the late 1990s, the Korean media and government viewed it as a turning point for the Korean economy, which was under a bailout program from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Interestingly, Hallyu began to be seen as a new source of pride for the nation and an economic opportunity. In the meantime, overseas fans of Korean popular culture became buyers of other Korean products. The scope of the Korean Wave ranges from fandom for television drama and pop music to businesses in tourism and cosmetics industries and inbound students from foreign countries. Further, there are more reasons to re-think and re-formulate the Korean Wave with more holistic and multi-layered approaches. The influx of capital and people to Hallyu-related industries has driven the competitive market system upwards, leading to some citizens criticizing the wave over the weakening public role of culture. We need to examine the structures and practices of diverse forms of Hallyu from an ecological perspective, by tracing the whole stream of production, consumption, regulation, and technology in each Hallyu product and phenomenon. With these concerns in mind, this study discusses the development of a new research design in understanding and analyzing the Korean Wave.
