『방한림전』에 나타나는 ‘양성성’과 가부장제

국문 초록

이 논문은 『방한림전』에 담긴 ‘양성성’에 주목한 것이다. 『방한림전』의 ‘방관주’라는 한 인물이 우리 사회에 규정처럼 존재하는 남녀라는 이분법적 성정체성을 극복하고, 양성성을 갖춘 한 인간으로서의 온전한 성숙의 과정을 담아낸 작품으로 볼 수 있었기 때문이다. 『방한림전』의 의미를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 『방한림전』은 기존 여성영웅소설이 주된 주제로 삼고 있는 남녀의 차별과 대립에서 벗어나 있다는 점이다. 둘째, 『방한림전』은 미분화적 성정체성을 가지고 있던 방관주가 동성혼을 하게 되고, 혼인기간을 유지하면서 그동안 은폐돼 있던 여성성을 회복, 양성성을 획득하는 정신적 성장과정을 그려낸 이야기임을 확인할 수 있었다. 셋째, 『방한림전』에서 읽어낼 수 있는 긍정적 가치로서의 ‘양성성’의 의미를 살펴볼 수 있었다. 한 인간이 인간으로서 가장 강해졌을 때는 남성성과 여성성이 정신적으로 협력하며 조화를 이루었을 때, 즉 ‘양성성’이 발현되었을 때임을 『방한림』 은 잘 말해주고 있었다. 마지막으로 방관주가 양성성을 갖추고 성숙하면서도 영웅적 인물로 편입할 수 있었던 기저에는 ‘지기’였던 영혜빙과의 동성혼으로 이루어진 ‘가정’이라는 공간이 있었기 때문임을 알 수 있었다. 이 공간은 상호간에 안전한 보호막의 역할은 물론이요, 숨기고 살아야하는 긴장의 삶 속에 유일한 안식처로서의 역할을 제공받을 수 있게 됐다는 점에서 의미 있는 공간임을 확인할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This paper focuses on positiveness in 『Banghanlimjeon』. This is because a person named Bangwan-ju in 『Banghanlimjeon』overcame the dichotomous gender identity of men and women in our society and demonstrated the process of full maturity as a human being. The meaning of 『Banghanlimjeon』 is as follows. First, 『Banghanlimjeon』 is a departure from the discrimination and conflict between men and women, whose main theme is the existing Femaleheronovel. Second, 『Banghanlimjeon』 is a story about the process of mental growth by which the bystander who had an undifferentiated gender identity entered into a same-sex marriage and recovered the femininity that was concealed and acquired positivity during the marriage period. I could confirm it. Third, we could examine the meaning of “positiveness” as a positive value that can be read in the 『Banghanlimjeon』. 『Banghanlimjeon』 said that when a person being became the strongest human, the masculine and feminine mentally cooperated and harmonized, and that is when “positiveness” was manifested. Finally, it was found that there was a space called ‘home’ that was made up of a samesex marriage with Young Hye-bing, who was a “keeper”. This space was found to be meaningful because it was able to provide a role as the only resting place in a life of tension that must be hidden and lived, as well as the role of a safety shield between each other.
