대학의 봉사학습(Service-Learning) 운영 사례

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 대학의 교양과목과 연계된 봉사학습활동이 멘토 학생들과 멘티 학생들에게 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 교육적 의미를 탐색하고자 하였다. 연구 참여자는 서울 소재 모 대학 재학생 11명이며, 한 학기동안 3개의 외부기관에서 총 22시간 이상 교육봉사에 참여하였다. 본 연구에서 제시한 연구문제를 해결하기 위해 학습자 관찰일지, 온라인 성찰일지, 개인면담, 집단면담, 중간평가회, 기말평가회에서 나온 내용들을 바탕으로 분석하였다. 학습자 관찰일지와 온라인 성찰일지는 봉사 후 멘토 학생들이 매주 작성하였으며, 개인면담과 집단면담은 매주 수업 직후에 해당교실에서 이루어졌으며, 중간평가회와 기말평가회는 중간고사와 기말고사 직전 주에 실시되었다. 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 애니메이션동화를 활용한 봉사학습은 멘티 학생들의 영어를 대하는 태도에 긍정적 영향을 미친 것으로 나타났다. 특히, 멘티 학생들의 영어에 대한 흥미도, 참여도, 집중력을 높여주는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 애니메이션동화를 활용한 봉사학습은 멘토 학생들에게도 긍정적 태도변화를 가져온 것으로 나타났다. 지식을 저소득층 학생들에게 더욱더 효과적으로 나누어주는 계기뿐만 아니라 의사소통기술, 책임감, 이타심이 길러진 것으로 보고되었다. 이번 사례연구는 봉사학습경험이 멘토와 멘티 학생 모두에게 긍정적 영향을 미치며, 대학에서 효과적인 봉사학습방법으로 이용될 수 있는 가능성을 보여준다.

영문 초록

This study explores the educational implications of service learning activities linked to liberal arts courses in university. Eleven students taking an English course from a Seoul-based university participated in a total of 22 hours of educational service at three outside institutions during the semester. The analysis was based on the contents of the learner observation logs, online reflection logs, individual interviews, group interviews, and evaluation meetings. Learner observation logs and online reflection logs were written every week by mentors, and individual interviews and group interviews were held on a regular basis. Evaluation meetings were conducted one week prior to the students mid-terms and final exams. The results indicated that service learning activities, such as those that used animated stories, had a positive effect on the mentees attitude toward English. First, they encouraged the mentees interest in English, and improved their participation and concentration in English class. Second, it was found that service learning activities brought positive attitudinal changes in mentors as well. Some reported that their communication skills, responsibilities, and altruism improved. Third, the activities with animated stories facilitated the dissemination of mentors knowledge to mentees from low-income families. These results confirmed that this service learning experience has a positive effect on both mentees and mentors and demonstrates its potential to be used as an effective teaching method in university.
