국문 초록

본 연구는 경기교육종단연구의 초등학교 4, 5, 6학년 자료를 대상으로 학생관련변인이 영어 점수와 어떠한 연관이 있으며 영어 학업성취도에 대한 예측력이 학년별로 어떠한 차이가 있는지를 상관분석과 단계적 회귀분석을 통해 알아보았다. 11 개의 학생관련 변인은 경기교육종단연구의 학생과 학부모 대상 설문지에서 추출하였다. 본 연구에서 살펴본 세 가지의 연구질문은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학년별로 학생변인의 추이는 어떻게 나타나는가? 둘째, 11개의 학생변인과 영어 점수는 어떠한 상관관계를 나타내는가? 셋째, 학년별로 학생변인의 영어 학업성취도에 대한 예측력은 어떻게 다르게 나타나는가? 모든 통계분석은 SPSS 프로그램을 활용하였으며 기술통계, 상관관계, 단계적 회귀분석을 수행하였다. 주요 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학생변인의 학년별 추이분석 결과, 숙제시간, 스스로 공부하는 시간, 영어 사교육 비용은 초등학교 5학년에서 가장 높게 나타났으며, 영어 수업 이해도, 영어수업 집중시간, 수업태도, 교사의 수업능력에 대한 인식은 학년이 높아질수록 근소 하게 낮아졌다. 둘째, 학생변인과 영어 성취도와의 상관관계 분석결과, 초등학생의 모든 학년에서 영어 점수와 학생변인이 전체적으로 유의미한 상관관계를 가지며 그 중에서 영어수업 이해도가 영어 점수와 가장 높은 정적상관을 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 단계적 회귀분석 결과 초등학교 4, 5, 6학년 모두에서 영어 학업성취도를 가장 잘 예측하는 변인은 영어 수업 이해도, 두 번째로 유의미한 변인은 영어 사교육 비용으로 나타났다. 본 연구결과를 통해 영어 학업성취도 향상과 학교교 육의 발전을 위한 정책적 제언을 제시한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effect of students’ variables on their performance on English achievement tests, using the GEPS(Gyeonggi Education Panel Study) data. In this study, 4th (n=1781), 5th (n=2148), and 6th (n=2299) graders’ English test scores in the year of 2012, 2013, and 2014 were employed and eleven variables were selected from the survey data from students as well as their parents. The following three research questions were addressed. First, what is the trend for student variables across the grade level? Second, what is the relationship between student variables and performance on English achievement tests? Third, what is the predictive power of students’ variables across the grade level? Three statistical analyses (descriptive, correlation, and multiple regression analysis) were performed using the SPSS version 26. Major findings of the study are as follows. Among eleven student variables, ‘understanding in English class’, ‘time of concentration in class’, ‘attitude toward class’, and ‘perceptions of teachers’ competence’ gradually decreased as the grade level increased. According to the correlation analysis, ‘understanding in English class’ was highly correlated with English achievement test scores among eleven variables. Results also showed that ‘understanding in English class’ was the most powerful predictor of performance on English achievement tests. The second most powerful predictor turned out to be ‘money spent on private English tutoring’ across the grade level. The predictive power of ‘self-efficacy’ became stronger, as the grade level increases. The findings of the study provide practical implications for increasing English achievement in elementary school.
