Physical Education Experiences among Athletes with Visual Impairments in South Korea

국문 초록

외국의 경우 시각 장애인들의 체육수업에 대한 경험과 관련된 연구가 증가함에도 불구하고, 국내에서는 시각장애인들의 체육 교육, 예를 들어 체육수업 참여 및 관련 경험에 관한 연구는 매우 제한적인 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구의 목적은 국내 시각장애 운동선수들의 이전 체육 수업 참여 및 경험을 살펴보는 것이다. 해석 현상학적 분석 (IPA) 연구 방법을 토대로 시각 장애를 가지고 있는 대학생 6명 (21-22 세, 여성 4 명, 남성 2 명)이 연구에 참여하였다. 자료 수집은 2017년 8월부터 9월까지 반구조화 된 면담 지침에 따라 대면 면담을 실시하였다. 중심 주제의 개발은 IPA의 지침대로 3단계 과정을 활용하여 수행되었다. 데이터 분석을 바탕으로 세 가지 상호 연관된 주제가 구성되었다: (a) “의미 있는 인간관계가 없었다. : 통합 수업에서의 교사와의 관계, (b) “그는 내 삶의 전환점을 담당했다 : 특수학교 체육교사들에 대한 관점, (c) “일종의 형제 같은 : 체육수업에 시각 장애가 있는 학생들 간의 우애. 도출된 주제는 국내의 체육교육에서 시각 장애를 지닌 학생들의 실제적인 경험에 대한 유용한 정보를 제공할 것이다. 또한 이러한 정보들은 시각 장애인을 위한 체육수업 개발 및 운영을 논의할 때 고려되어야 할 것으로 사료 된다.

영문 초록

Although research focusing on the experiences of those with visual impairments in physical education (PE) has grown, the existing published literature is limited tospecific geographic regions. For example, research focusing on experiences in PE in South Korea is absent among this population. The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences of South Korean athletes with visual impairments during PE. An interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) research approach was used and six South Korean adults (aged 21-22 years; four women, two men) athletes with visual impairments as participants. The data source was audiotaped face-to-face one-to-one interviews following a semi-structured interview guide which were conducted in August and September of 2017. Thematic development was undertaken which utilized a three-step process guided by IPA. Based on the data analysis, three interrelated themes were constructed: (a) “Didn’t have a meaningful relationship”: Teacher relations in integrated classes, (b) “He was responsible for the turning point in my life”: Viewpoints on physical educators at special education schools, and (c) “Something brotherly”: Camaraderie among students with visual impairments. The constructed themes provide a unique insight into the lived experiences of those with visual impairments in PE in South Korea. Findings of this study should be considered when discussing PE placement options for those with visual impairments.
