기억의 재현과 재해석 - 차범석에 대한 기억을 중심으로

국문 초록

본고의 목적은 한국 연극사에서 ‘사실주의’ ‘극작가’로 그 성격이 규정된 차범석의 연극 인생을 새롭게조망해 보는 것이다. 이를 위해 본고는 국립예술자료원이 2003년부터 2018년까지 연극인 49인을 대상으로 구술채록사업을 진행하여 얻은 구술채록본을 살펴보았다. 삶의 내력을 살펴보았을 때 차범석이 사실주의극을 쓴 것은 그를 비롯해 대한민국의 굴곡진 역사 속에서 피해자이자 가해자가 될 수밖에 없었던 사람들이 처했던 환경에 대한 구체적 상황 인식을 할 수 있게 함이었던 것으로 보인다. 물론 그렇게 이야기를 만드는 과정에서 자기 행위의 논리를 부여해 자기정체성을 확립하고자 하는 의도도 있었을 것으로 사료된다. 또한 그는 스스로 한국연극의 전기(轉機)를 만들기 위해 자신의 전부를 걸고 연극에 임했는데 이는 자신의 예술적 재능을 인정하지 않는 아버지에게 그 재능으로 성공하여 인정받고픈마음의 발로로 보인다. 그렇게 그는 누구보다 절실한 마음으로 연극에 임하여 시기에 따라 적확한 대안을 제시하고 그를 실행하기 위해 극작은 물론 연출, 평론, 연구, 극단 운영, 행정까지 전방위적으로 활동했다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to offer a fresh perspective on the theatrical career of Cha Beom Seok, whose persona is defined as a 'realistic playwright' in the history of Korean theater. To accomplish this, the paper examined 49 oral history transcripts obtained via the National Theatre Archives project, which documented the lives of 49 theater practitioners from 2003 to 2018. Cha Beom Seok's choice to write realistic dramas wasn't so much about him aligning with a particular tradition as it was about providing insight into the specific circumstances faced by individuals, himself included, within the complex history of South Korea. In this environment, they couldn't help but become both victims and perpetrators, and his work focused to shed light on this reality. In the process of creating the story, he tried to give logic to his actions, and this may have been intended to establish his own identity. In addition, he risked his all on the play to create a turning point in Korean theater. This appears to be an expression of his desire to succeed and be recognized for his artistic talent by his father, who does not recognize his artistic talent. So, he carried out a theater movement in all directions with a more desperate heart than anyone else.
