국문 초록

본 논문은 셰익스피어의 희곡 중 가장 많은 수의 음악 작품으로 탄생한 로미오와 줄리엣 의 작곡기법에 관한 연구이다. 연구의 방법으로 로미오와 줄리엣 에 나타난 극적 요소 중 하나인 장르전환을 고찰하고, 이를 자신의 작품에 활용한 세 작곡가의 표현 기법을 분석하였다. 이에 희곡의 특수성에부합하는 음악 장르 즉 음악과 극의 혼합 형태인 발레극, 오페라, 뮤지컬을 중심으로, 음악사에서 인정받은 프로코피에프와 구노, 그리고 번스타인의 작품을 선택하여 분석하였다. 분석 방법으로는 먼저 희곡의 장르전환 시점을 ‘결투/복수/추방’의 세 단계로 구분하고, 이후 각 작곡가의 작품에 연계하는 방식을 취했다. 이로 로미오와 줄리엣 에 나타난 장르전환 시점이 세 작곡가의 음악적 기법에 적용되는과정과, 서로 다른 장르적 특성에 부합되는 결과를 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 결과들은 곧 문학과 음악의 융합에 대한 효과적 방법의 제시로서, 다양한 예술과 콘텐츠의 결합에 있어 생산적인 관점을 제공한다.

영문 초록

This paper is a study on the composition technique of Romeo and Juliet , which was created as the largest number of music works among Shakespeare’s plays. As a research method, genre transference, one of the dramatic elements in Romeo and Juliet , was considered, and the expression techniques of the three composers who used it in their works were analyzed. Accordingly, music genres that match the specificity of plays, namely, ballet plays, operas, and musicals, which are mixed forms of music and drama, were selected and analyzed for works by Prokofiev, Gounod, and Bernstein, recognized in the history of music. As an analysis method, first, the time of genre transference of plays was divided into three stages ‘duel/revenge/exile’, and then linked to each composer’s work. As a result, it was possible to confirm the process in which the time of genre transference in Romeo and Juliet was applied to the musical techniques of three composers, and the results were consistent with the characteristics of different genres. These results provide an effective method for the convergence of literature and music, providing a productive perspective on the combination of various arts and contents.
