베스트영어교사 제도에 대한 인식 및 만족도 연구: 제주도 내 초등학교를 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 제주도 내 초등학교 베스트영어교사 제도에 대한 인식 및 만족도 연구를 통해 발전 방향을 모색하는 데 있다. 베스트영어교사제도는 초등학교의 내국인 TEE인증 교사가 원어민교사를 대체한다는 목적으로 2013년부터 전국에서는 유일하게 제주도에서 시행되고 있는 제도이다. 그러나 제도가 시행된 지 6년이 지난 지금까지 TEE인증 교사의 원어민교사 대체 가능성을 보여줄 이 제도에 대한 기존 연구는 거의 없는 실정이다. 이에 총 9개까지 베스트영어학교가 확대된 2015년 2학 기, 약 4주에 걸쳐 교사 9명, 학생 240명, 학부모 229명을 대상으로 설문 조사를 통해 제도에 대한 인식 및 만족도 연구를 수행하였다. 조사 결과, 첫째, 베스트영어학교의 교사의 자신감과 만족도는 평균 4.50점(만점 5점)과 4점 이상으로 대부분의 항목에서 높은 수준을 보였으나, 인센티브에 대한 만족감은 3.0점으로 상대적으로 낮게 나타났다. 교사들이 느끼는 가장 불만족스러운 부분은 주변의 인식(평균 2.50점)이었 다. 현직 베스트영어교사들은 교육자가 지녀야 할 책임감과 열의가 높고, 학생 관리 능력이 뛰어나다는 효능감을 가지고 있으며, 교육자로서의 책임감은 중압감으로 느끼는 부분이었다. 둘째, 학생과 학부모가 인식하는 베스트영어교사에 대한 흥미도, 만족도, 이해도 부분에서도 수업에 대한 이해도를 제외한 모든 항목에서 4점 이상의 높은 평균을 보였다. 반면 영어로 진행되는 TEE수업 내용에 대한 학생들의 이해도 평균이 비교적 낮은 것은 학생들 간의 영어 능력 편차가 크다는 현실을 반영하는 결과로 보인다. 학생과 학부모들의 85.20%와 69.43%가 원어민 교사와 비교할 때 베스 트영어교사의 수업이 더 효율적이라고 평가가한 조사 결과는 한국어로 의사소통이 자유로운 TEE인증 교사가 원어민교사를 대체한다는 취지의 베스트영어교사 제도의 가장 유력한 장점으로 밝혀졌다.

영문 초록

This study aims to investigate perceptions and satisfaction regarding the BEST English Teacher System in elementary schools in Jeju province by administering a questionnaire survey to 9 teachers, 240 students, and 229 school parents involved in the system. The BEST English Teacher System was introduced in Jeju in 2013 in order to encourage TEE certified teachers to maximize their English abilities in large-sized elementary schools in Jeju while replacing one of the English native teachers in the school. The results of the study showed two major points as follows: First, the Best English Teachers showed 4.50 points in self-confidence and 3.54 points in satisfaction with their working conditions and benefits. However, teachers overall satisfaction with the system and satisfaction toward incentives were relatively low showing the mean score slightly above the midpoint (3.00). The lowest mean was found in the satisfaction with others acknowledgement (2.50). Also, the Best English Teachers had both self-efficacies and pressures. Being nationally qualified teachers, they were proud of their abilities with management of students and they perceived themselves to be prepared with a sense of duty. Second, overall satisfaction of students and parents at the Best English Schools were, on average, above 4.00 points. However, the levels of understanding in English classes conducted by native English speakers and the Best English Teachers were 3.22 and 4.27, according to the students responses, while those were 3.20 and 3.87 according to the parents responses. The low level of understanding of English classes in English seems to reflect the fact that there is a large variation in English proficiency among students. In addition, 85.20% of the students and 69.43% of the parents answered that the teaching efficiencies of the Best English Teachers were higher than that of native English teachers. They pointed out that the advantage of the Best English Teachers was that they could understand the students better and could communicate with them in Korean as well as in English. However, as there are regional limitations, it will be necessary to continue research on ways to expand similar systems to broader areas.
