Are socialization and training two different notions in the rehabilitation processes of both human children and animals?

In general, socialization is the result of implicit and unconscious instructions over a period of time, and training is the result of explicit and repetitive instructions for a specific purpose within a relatively short period. In this paper, however, we argue that socialization and training are not fixed or clear-cut notions that should be applied to humans and animals separately. Instead, training as a sub-category of socialization comes into play in both humans and dogs socialization processes whenever needed. This argument is supported through a comparison of two rehabilitation TV shows in two different cultures. Both of them focus on rehabilitating subjects with behavioral problems and employ experts who have relevant knowledge and experiences. By finding out the sources of the problems and coming up with solutions, the experts play a significant role. the parents and dogs owners, as well as the subject themselves, are also seen as having to go through some changes. In this paper, the applicability of both socialization and training to humans and dogs is discussed and a comparison of the two TV shows reveal the mutual influences of socialization and training. Even though the two shows differ in subjects, narration styles, relationships between guests and experts, and the frequencies of interactions between them, they show considerable similarities in many respects. The findings show that dogs are socialized into humans‘ world by acquiring rules and norms through sharing or communication with humans, just as children are socialized by obtaining sociocultural knowledge, values, beliefs, and a worldview. Thus, the two notions can be applied to both humans and animals, and socialization can be defined as an ongoing process that requires some training.

영문 초록

일반적으로 사회화는 오랜 기간 동안 내재적이고 무의식적으로 이루어진 교육의 결과라고 할 수 있고 훈련이라는 것은 비교적 짧은 기간 동안 특정한 목적을 가지고 이루어진 외 현적이고 반복적인 교육의 형태라 볼 수 있다. 하지만 본 연구에서는 사회화와 훈련이 두 가지 개념이 인간이나 동물에게 각각 적용되어지는 완전히 다른 개념이 아니라 훈련이라는 것은 사회화가 일어나는 과정 즉 인간이나 동물의 사회화 과정 속에서 훈련이 필요할 때면 언제나 이루어질 수 있는 사회화의 하부 유형이라고 논지를 펼치고 있다, 이 주장은 서로 다른 문화 즉 미국 TV 프로그램인 ‘개에게 속삭이는 사람, The dog whisperer 에서 전문가가 개의 행동 방식을 변화시키는 과정과 한국 TV 프로그램 ’우리 아이가 달라졌어요‘ 에서 아동 전문가가 아동의 잘못된 행동양식을 바꾸는 과정을 비교, 문석하면서 뒷받침하고 있다. 다시 말해, 두 프로그램에서 아이와 개에게 행해지고 있는 일련의 교육이 비교적 짧은 시간 반복적으로 이루어지고 있다고 보고 훈련이라는 것은 사회화의 과정 속에서 이루어지는 하나의 하부 개념이라고 보고 있다. 즉, 개는 규칙, 규범을 습득하고 인간과 의사소통함으로써 인간 세상으로 사회화가 이루어지고 아이들은 사회문화적인 지식, 가치, 믿음을 습득함으로써 사회화가 이루어지고 있다고 보고 있다. 그러므로 이 두 가지 개념은 완전히 다름 개념이 아닌 어린이와 동물을 사회화 시키는 과정의 연속선상 안에서 짧은 기간 필수적으로 이루어져야 하는 교육 즉 훈련도 또 다른 사회화의 종류라고 주장하고 있다.
