The teacher’s role in helping a newly arrived child in preschool

국문 초록

이 연구는 유아교사가 다른 언어와 문화배경을 가진 아이가 교실에 새로 왔을 때, 아이의 적응을 돕기 위해 교실에서 무엇을 할 수 있을지 알아보려고 것이었다. 이 연구에 참여한 3살 데니는 얼마 전 미국에 왔고, 가족의 상황으로 인해 미국에서 처음으로 부모님과 함께 살게 되었다. 데니는 한국에서 친조부모와 함께 살았고, 데니의 할아버지가 데니의 애착인물이었다. 그러나, 데니는 그와 애착관계를 맺고 있던 할아버지와 떨어지게 되었고 이것은 아이에게 굉장한 스트레스를 주게 되었다. 이러한 상황에서 연구자는 데니가 교실과 가정에서 어떻게 적응 하게 되는지 부모님과의 인터뷰와 수업 관찰을 통해 알아보았다. 다섯 번의 인터뷰를 통해 데니의 가족상황과 데니의 행동에 대한 이해를 할 수 있었다. 이 연구의 분석 결과 다른 문화에서 온 새로운 아이들의 적응을 돕기 위해 선생님은 아이와의 애착 관계를 맺도록 하고, 아이의 정서와 필요에 민감하게 반응하며, 아이의 가족과 긴밀한 관계를 통해 아이의 적응을 도울 수 있다는 결론을 맺는다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate what early childhood teachers can do for newcomers with a different language and cultural background. Denny, a 3-year-old who participated in the study, had just moved to the States and begun to live with his parents due to complicated family situations. As he used to live with his grandparents in Korea, Denny’s grandfather was his secure figure. However, he had to separate from his attachment relationship to his grandfather, which caused tremendous stress to him. In this situation, the researcher intended to look into his family and his adaptation to the classroom through interviews with his parents and observations of the class. A series of interviews widened the understanding of Denny’s family background and his behavior. The results suggest that teachers who work with newcomers of a different culture should put more effort in promoting a sense of attachment with the child, showing sensitivity that responds to the child’s interests and needs, and building a partnership with the child’s family.
