국문 초록

이 연구는 개항 후 한국에 와서 동학, 청일전쟁, 러일전쟁을 겪고 한일병탄을 함께 한 미국선교사 안애리(安愛理)의 Inside Views of Mission Life를 중심으로 선교활동과 한국문화 이해를추적하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 안애리는 한국근대전환기 문화변용의 한축을 담당했던 외국인 선교사로서의 역할 뿐만 한국문화를 소개하는 데 해외에 있는 인적·지적 네트워크를 사용했다. 안애리는 초기의 작품인 Fifty Helps의 부록에서 신입 선교사들에게 서구문화에 대해 갖기 쉬운 편견과 우월감에서 벗어나 한국인과 한국문화를 존중하는 태도를 주문한다. 이런 태도는 마지막 작품인 Inside Views of Mission Life에서도 지속적으로 이어지고 있다. 그리고 그는 한국의 근대전환기에서 서구인의 시선으로 한국문화를 바라보지 말고 한국사회의 생활방식과 문화를 존중해야한다는 생각을 놓치지 않았다. 그리고 우리에게 근대전환기 미국식 근대가 시험 되었던 평양에대한 관심을 불러준다. 우리는 안애리를 선교사의 부인, 교육가, 문학가로 기억하기보다는 19세기‘한국학’ 세우기에 동참한 한국학의 개척자로 평가해야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

This study aims to trace the understanding of Korean culture, focusing on the Inside Views of Mission Life by Annie Baird, an American missionary who came to Korea during the late nineteenth century, the warring period of Korea (e.g., the Korean-Japanese war with Donghak, Sino-Japanese War, and Russo-Japanese War). Ae-ri Ahn used her intellectual connections abroad to introduce Korean culture, as well as her role as a foreign missionary who played a part in the transformation of culture during this Korean modern transition period. In the appendix of her early work titled Fifty Helps, Ahn asks new missionaries to assume an attitude of respect for Koreans and Korean culture, and to set themselves free from the prejudice and superiority they tend to have toward Western culture. This attitude continues to feature in her final work, Inside Views of Mission Life, and she does not miss the idea of respecting the lifestyle and culture of Korean society instead of looking at Korean culture through the eyes of Westerners in the period of modern transition. Thus, this study argues that Ahn should be evaluated as a pioneer of Korean studies who participated in the establishment of “Korean Studies” in the nineteenth century rather than remembering her as a missionary s wife, educator, and literary woman
