『생의 이면』의 모티프와 서사적 역능

국문 초록

본고에서는 이승우의 대표적 자전 소설 생의 이면(1992)에서 나타나는 소문 모티프와 그 서사적 역능에 착목하였다. 구체적으로는 투사와 동일시, 콤플렉스, 환상 등의 정신분석학적 개념을 원용하여 형식과 주제의 측면을 함께 고찰하였다. 또한 서사(물)의 정향과 서사성에 주목하여 ‘서사적 진실’과 ‘소문의 내용(진상)’ 관계를 살펴보았다. 생의 이면에서의 인물들은 자신들을 둘러싼 ‘소문’ 속의 삶을 살고 있다. 부모와 연인, 친구까지 소문의 생성과 전개는 인물들의 삶의 궤적에 연동된다. 그 속에서 한 인간(박부길)은 상처를 지닌 채 살아나간다. 아버지와 어머니의 부재로 인한 트라우마로 그는 신의 대리인이자 욕망의 통로로서 한 여성(김종단)에게 성결한 이미지를 투영하였다가 폐기한다. 신성스러움과 두려움, 친밀감과 두려움을 느끼는 대상과의 내적 갈등을 해소하고 욕망을 충족하기 위해 환상을 소환하기도 한다. 소설 속 이야기이기도 한 고백의 형식으로서 자전소설의 양식은 주인공이자 주요 서술자인 ‘나’/‘그’(박부길)의 자가치유의 효과적 방편이 될 수 있다. 독자는 박부길의 이야기와 글을 통해 내포작가의 존재뿐만 아니라 작가 이승우의 심리전기를 그려볼 수도 있다. 또한 메타픽션이라는 형식적 특성과 자전 소설이라는 내용적 특성은 삶의 불가해성을 암시하는 역설적 상황을 드러낸다. 작품 속에서 나타나는 운명론적 구조는 삶에 대한 목적론적 인식을 드러내며 인식론적 착종의 과정을 보여준다. 더불어 욕망의 추구와 필연적 좌절이라는 인간이 지닌 본래적 한계를 보여준다.

영문 초록

This article shares views on the rumor motifs and its narrative competence in the autobiographical novel of Lee Seung-woo titled “The Other Side of Life” (1992). More specifically, it quotes psychoanalytical concepts such as projection, identification, complexes, and fantasies, and examines aspects of form and theme. In addition, it observes the dynamics of the relationship between “narrative truth” and “rumor contents” by focusing on the nature and form of the narrative. Characters in “The Other Side of Life” lives surrounded by “rumors.” The creation and development of rumors from parents to lovers and friends is interlocked with the trajectory of the characters’s lives. Amid this, one person (Park Bu Gil) lives carrying emotional scars. The trauma of having an absent father and mother projects an image of holiness onto a woman (Kim Jong Dan) as an agent of God and as a channel of desire and then discards it. He has conflicts with people who feel holiness, fear and intimacy. So he brings Fantasy to resolve his inner conflict and to satisfy his desires. The story in the novel is also a type of confession and the autobiographical novel form can serve as an effective self-healing method for the protagonist and main narrator “me”/“him” (Park Bu Gil). Through the story and writing of Park Bu Gil, readers can not only picture the existence of the implied author but also that of the psychological biography of the author Lee Seung-woo. Also, its formal nature as meta-fiction and the characteristics of its contents as a biographical novel reveal paradoxical situations that suggest the incomprehensibility of life. In addition, the structure of fatalism that appears within the work reveals purposeful perceptions regarding life and displays epistemological entanglement (process). Also, it shows the pursuit of desires and the natural limitation of humans referred to as inevitable frustration.
