국문 초록

에우리피데스의 메데이아에서 이아손은 메데이아의 분노의 원인이고 복수의 대상이다. 본 논문은 이아손이 메데이아의 복수를 전혀 예측하지 못한 이유를 단초로 하여 이아손의 비극을 분석해보고자 한다. 우선 ‘이아손의 무지와 부정의’를 분석한다. 이아손의 무지는 특히 메데이아의 복수와 관련되어 있다. 이아손은 메데이아에 대해 전면적으로 무지하지는 않았다. 단지 당시 그리스의 사회의 관습이 이아손의 무지를 가중시킨 것으로 보인다. 이아손의 무지의 원인은 첫째, ‘가부장제 사회의 여성 인식’ 둘째, ‘이방인으로서의 정치적 약자 인식’ 셋째, ‘지식의 본성에 대한 인식’ 등으로 구분할 수 있다. 다음으로 메데이아에 대한 ‘이아손의 배신과 필리아’를 분석한다. 이아손의 배신행위를 (A1) ‘법’적 측면과 (A2) ‘윤리’적 측면으로 구분하여 평가했다. 먼저 (A1) 법적 측면에서는 당시 국가법과 신법의 갈등 및 ‘맹세’ 개념에 중점을 두고 이아손의 배신을 분석하고, (A2) 윤리적 측면에서는 당시 그리스의 필리아 개념에 중점을 두고 이아손의 배신을 분석한다. 마지막으로 ‘이아손의 파렴치와 여성혐오’와 관련하여 분석한다. 그리스에서 ‘수치’ 개념은 명예와 연관된다. 그리스인들의 윤리적 판단 기준으로 서 수치와 관련된 논의를 통해 이아손의 파렴치에 대해 진단한다. 특히 이아손이 자신을 정당화하는 과정에서 자기기만과 자기연민에 빠져 내뱉는 여성혐오 발언은 메데이아의 복수심을 강화하는 계기된다. 결국 이아손의 불행은 자신의 무지와 파렴치에 의한 하마르티아(hamartia)와 휘브리스(hybris) 때문이라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

In Euripides’ Medea, Jason is the cause of Medea’s anger and the object of revenge. This study analyzes the tragedy of Jason, based on the fact that Jason did not anticipate Medea’s revenge. First, It is related Jason’s ignorance and injustice. The former is particularly related to Medea’s revenge. Jason was not completely ignorant of Medea; the customs of Greek society at the time seem to have increased his ignorance. The causes of Jason’s ignorance can be classified into “the perception of women in the patriarchal society,” “the perception of the weak as a stranger,” and “the perception of the nature of knowledge.” Next, It is related Jason’s betrayal and philia toward Medea. His betrayal behavior was evaluated by dividing them into (B1) “law” and (B2) “ethics.” First, (B1) in the legal aspect, I analyze Jason’s betrayal by focusing on the conflict of the national and the divine laws, and the concept of oath. Finally, It is related Jason’s shamelessness and misogyny. In Greece, the concept of shame is associated with honor. It is diagnosed Jason’s shamelessness through argument related to shame as the standard of ethical judgment of the Greeks. In particular, Medea’s anger extends the scope of revenge in the process of Jason’s misogynistic speech, falling into self- deception and self-pity in the process of justifying himself.
