영화 <조커>의 각색에 있어서 ‘언제’의 문제

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 앨런 무어의 그래픽 노블 <배트맨: 킬링 조크>가 토드 필립스의 영화 <조커>로 각색되면서 시간적 맥락의 변화에 따라 어떤 차이가 발생하는가를 고찰하는 데 있었다. 그 고찰을 위해, 인물의 측면에 있어서 조커에 대한 해석의 변화를, 사건과 배경의 측면에 있어서 현대 미국 사회의 반영을 영화에서 분석하였다. 첫째, <배트맨: 킬링 조크>가 각색을 통해 조커라는 전형적 인물에 입체감을 부여했다면, 이 그래픽 노블을 영화로 재각색한 <조커>는 정신질환자 아서 플렉을 차별과 배제의 대상인 타자로 해석하고 있다. 둘째, 필립스의 영화는 각색을 통해 무어의 그래픽 노블처럼 조커가 ‘재수 없는 하루’ 때문이 아니라 ‘재수 없는 누적된 사건들’에 의해 범죄자가 되고, 양극화 문제가 더 심각해지고 약자를 보호하는 시스템이 붕괴될 때 조커와 같은 존재가 출현할 수 있음을 보여줌으로써 사회적 약자에 대한 배려가 필요함을 강조한다. 셋째, <조커>의 배경인 1981년 뉴욕(고담)은 양극화가 미국에서 본격화한 시대와 그것이 가장 심각했던 도시인데, 사실 영화는 이 배경이 대신하고 있는 ‘지금 여기’의 사건들을 통해 조커가 제기하는 문제가 바로 현재 우리가 직면하고 있는 문제임을 일깨운다. 이러한 분석을 통해 시간적 맥락의 변화에 따른 각색이 계속해서 이루어지는 것은 이야기의 시간을 갱신하여 청중에게서 동시대적인 반향을 이끌어내기 위함이며, 조커 이야기의 계속되는 각색이 갖는 의미는 그것이 유전자에 비교될 수 있는 밈으로서 지속되도록 한다는 데 있음을 확인하였다.

영문 초록

This study aimed to examine the differences resulting from the change in temporal context as Alan Moore’s graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke was adapted into a film titled Joker by Todd Phillips. To this end, changes in interpretation of Joker in terms of character and reflections of modern American society in terms of events and backgrounds were analyzed. First, while Batman: The Killing Joke gave a three-dimensional effect to a typical character called Joker, the movie adaptation of the graphic novel interpreted Arthur Fleck, a mentally ill person, as “the other,” an object of discrimination and exclusion. Second, Phillips’ film emphasizes the need for consideration for the socially underprivileged by showing that Joker became a criminal not because of “one bad day” as shown in Moore’s graphic novel, but because of “accumulated bad events,” and that beings like Joker can emerge when the polarization problem gets worse and when the system that protects the weak collapses. Third, the story is set in New York (Gotham) in 1981, an era when polarization took off in the United States and the city where it was the most serious. In fact, the film reminds us that the problem Joker raises is the problem we are facing right now, through the events of the “here now” that this background replaces. Thus, we confirm that the continuous adaptations according to the change in the temporal context is to update the time of the story to elicit a contemporary echo from the audience, and the continuous adaptations of the story of the Joker has allowed it to persist as a meme that can be compared to gene.
