한국어 학습자의 ‘띄어쓰기 공백’ 인지 양상에 대한 분석 방법 시론(試論)

국문 초록

이 연구는 한국어 학습자들이 한국어를 쓰는 과정에서 나타나는 ‘띄어쓰기 공백(spacing)’이 학습자가 갖고 있는 한국어에 대한 분석적이고 문법적인 언어 인식을 잘 드러내 줄 수 있는 일종의 ‘발현 증거’로 간주해 볼 수 있는지 그 가능성을 타진해 보고, 이를 실증적으로 연구하기 위해서 어떤 계량 방식을 써볼 수 있는지 시론의 차원에서 제안해 보면서 관련한 연구문제들을 촉발하고자 하는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 이를 위한 전제 작업으로서 띄어쓰기의 학술적 개념을 살펴보고 구두법 안에서 띄어쓰기 공백이 갖는 위상과 특성을 고찰하였다. 이어서 실제 띄어쓰기 공백의 사례를 들어 분석해 보았다. 분석 대상으로는 근대 초기에서부터 해방 전후의 한국어 교재 5종에 참고로 북한의 외국인 대상 한국어 교재 1종을, 또 초·중급 수준의 한국어 학습자 각 3인과 참고로 고급 학습자 1인을 설정하였다. 교재 사료와 학습자 자료를 살펴본 결과, 띄어쓰기 공백에 개입하는 다양한 ‘정서법 지식(Orthographic knowledge)’이 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이렇게 이루어진 해석들을 바탕으로 띄어쓰기 공백의 연구 필요성을 제기하면서, 기존에 확보된 원자료들을 계량적으로 활용할 수 있는 방법론을 제안하였다.

영문 초록

This study aimed to examine the possibility of regarding the punctuationspacing of Korean learners in the process of writing as a kind of “evidence of emergence,” revealing the learners’ cognitive and grammatical perceptions of the Korean language. This study also suggests what measurement methods could be used to empirically study it and urges further studies. As a prerequisite, I examined the academic and operational concept of spacing and considered the status and characteristics of spacing in punctuation. Subsequently, I analyzed the case of actual spaces and spaces. For analysis, I selected five Korean language textbooks from the early modern period before and after liberation, and one Korean language textbook for foreigners in North Korea as a reference, and three Korean language learners at the elementary and intermediate level, as well as one advanced learner as a reference. As a result of examining the textbook materials and the learner’s data, it was confirmed that there are various “orthographic knowledge” that intervene in the spaces. Based on these interpretations, this study raises the need for additional research on spacing and proposes a methodology that could quantitatively analyze the existing original data.
