국문 초록

본고는 종교인구 감소의 시대 종교의 스포츠 활용현황과 방식을 주로 가톨릭과 개신교의 활동을 중심으로 고찰한 것이다. 통계청의 조사(2015)에 의하면 최근 각 종교별로 차이가 있기는 하나 대부분 신자 감소의 위기를 겪고 있는 것으로 나타난다. 그 위기의 원인은 어느 종교를 막론하고 대부분 ‘이웃’에 대한 관심과 사랑의 부족에 근거한다는 점에서는 일치하고 있어 특히 그 보완을 위한 스포츠의 역할이 기대된다. 2000년대 이전에는 종교-스포츠 관계에서 그 유사성에 초점을 두고 ‘종교로서의 스포츠’ 또는 ‘스포츠 종교’를 내세운 학자들이 많았으나 21세기 진입 후에는 고찰 주체가 학계를 넘어 교회, 교황청 등 종교 지도부가 참여하거나 주도하게 되면서 종교의 스포츠 활용에서도 차이가 드러난다. 가톨릭은 스포츠의 가치에 초점을 두고 인성 교육에 관심을 집중하는 반면 개신교에서는 축구와 태권도와 같은 스포츠의 인기를 국내외 전문인 선교의 수단으로 삼는 스포츠 사역이 매우 중요한 활용방식이 되었다. 교황청의 목표는 다양한 분야가 참여하는 국제회의를 통해 스포츠의 중요성을 환기시켰으나 그 공동의 가치를 좀 더 구체화시키는 노력이 요구되고, 개신교의 경우 중점이 스포츠 사역에 주어지고, 특히 미전도지역인 해외에서 그 성과가 드러나고 있으나 스포츠의 기술 전수를 종교 전파의 수단으로 삼는다는 문제점이 있어 이러한 점들은 앞으로 종교의 스포츠 활용의 한 특성과 과제가 될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the current status and methods that pertain to the use of sports in the era of religious population decline, mainly focusing on Catholic and Protestant activities. According to a Statistics Korea survey (2015), most religions are in a state of crisis due to a decreasing number of believers, although each religion experiences this to a different extent. However, the cause of the crisis is consistent across religions; it is mostly based on a lack of interest and a lack of neighborly love. Consequently, the role sports can play in religion is highly anticipated. Before the 2000s, there were many scholars who focused on similarities in the religion-sport relationship, advocating “sports as religion” or “sport religion.” With the onset of the 21st century, differences in religions’ use of sports have been highlighted as the body of inquiry expanded beyond academia and religious leaders, such as churches and the Vatican, either joined or led the way. Catholicism focuses on the value of sports and personality education; meanwhile, in Protestantism, the sports ministry, which popularizes sports such as soccer and taekwondo as a means of tentmaking both at home and abroad, has found very important ways of utilizing them. The Vatican aims to emphasize the importance of sports through international conferences that span various fields; however, efforts must be made to further embody common values. In the case of Protestantism, it is the sports ministry that is emphasized, and this has produced results, especially in unreached regions abroad; nevertheless, there is a problem because the teaching of sports skills is used as a means of spreading religion. These points are considered part and parcel of the characteristics and challenges of using sports in religion in the future.
