국문 초록

본 연구는 현대 국어에서 생산적으로 사용되고 있는 ‘-(으)ㄹ 수 있-’ 의 문법화 과정을 기술하는 것에 목적을 둔다. 구체적으로, ‘-(으)ㄹ 수 있-’의 구조, 양태, 의미의 측면에서의 변화를 살펴봄으로써 그 문법화 과정을 고찰한다. ‘-(으)ㄹ 수 있-’은 ‘방법’을 의미하는 명사 ‘수’에서 비롯되었다. 과거에 일반 명사였던 ‘수’가 현대 국어에서 불완전 명사로 사용되면서 서술어로 ‘- ㄹ’이나 ‘-ㄴ’을 부사로 취하고, ‘-있’이나 ‘-없’을 서술어로 취하게 되었다. 이러한 ‘-(으)ㄹ 수 있-’은 다양한 형태의 문법화 과정을 거쳐 현재의 구조, 양태 및 의미를 갖게 된 것을 알 수 있다. 특히 양태의 관점에서 ‘-(으)ㄹ 수 있-’의 문법화 과정은 특별하다고 할 수 있다. 선행 연구에서 제시된 문법화의 일반적 원리와 반대로(Hopper & Traugott, 2003), 형태적 변화가 의미적 변화에 선행한다. 게다가 ‘-(으)ㄹ 수 있-’의 이러한 변화는 ‘수’의 의미가 ‘방법’에서 ‘가능성’으로 확대되는 의미 확장(semantic extension)을 바탕으로 한다.

영문 초록

This study describes the grammaticalization process of -(u)l-swu~iss- in Korean, presenting it according to structural, modal, and meaning changes. The construction of -(u)l-swu~iss- originated from the noun swu, which means “way” or “method.” While this common noun is now used as a defective noun, swu selects -l or -n as an adnominal and -iss (-eps) as a predicate. The construction of -(u)l-swu~iss- shows diverse grammaticalized forms in contemporary Korean. With regard to modality, the grammaticalization of -(u)l-swu~iss- is unique in that a formal change precedes a semantic change. In addition, this development is based on the semantic extension from “way” to “possibility.” This study also shows that the grammaticalization of -(u)l-swu~iss- is a counter-example to the general grammaticalization principle that is proposed in the literature wherein semantic change generally precedes structural change (Givon, 1975: 86; Heine et al., 1991: 213). Finally, in the grammaticalization of -(u)l-swu~iss-, it is a structural adjustment that facilitates the semantic shift from a lexical to a grammatical meaning.
