학습상황에 따른 한국학습자들의 영어공손책략

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 다양한 체면위협상황들에서 한국대학생들의 영어요구화행에 나타난 공손표현능력을 알아보는데 있다. 이를 위해 ESL학습자들과 EFL학습자들 그리고 영어모국어화자들이 피험자로 참여한 연구에서, 자료수집도구로서 DCT(담화완성과업)가 사용되었는데, 피험자들은 DCT의 다양한 상황들에서 자신들의 요구화행수행을 글로 작성하였고, 요구화행실현에서 사용된 공손책략은 적극적 공손책략과 소극적 공손책략(Brown & Levinson, 1987)의 두 범주로 나누어 분석되었다. 전반적인 연구결과에 의하면, 두 집단의 학습자들과 영어모국어화자들에간에 각 상황에서 활용된 공손책략의 유형과 빈도에서 분명한 차이들이 존재하였으며, 학습자집단들의 L2공손표현능력이 불완전하고 불충분함을 알 수 있었다. 그럼에도 ESL학습자들은 요구화행실현에서 다변(verbosity)의 특징을 보였지만 EFL학습자들보다 L2공손규범 더 가까이 근접해 있음이 나타났으며, EFL학습자들은 매우 제한된 유형의 책략을 가장 적게 활용함으로서 그들의 요구행위속에서 필요한 공손의 양을 적절히 표현하지 않음으로서 상대방에게 덜 공손하거나 무례하게 보일 수 있는 가능성이 높아보였다. 이런 결과를 바탕으로 학습자들의 부족한 L2공손능력의 발전과 증진에 도움이 될 수 있는 L2화용적 수업을 위한 여러 제안이 제시되었다.

영문 초록

The aim of the paper was to look into Korean learners’ pragmatic abilities to express politeness in English requests under various face-threatening situations. To this end, a study was conducted in which Korean learners of both EFL and ESL and English native speakers participated as subjects, and were asked to perform their requests in situations of discourse completion task. Data were analyzed in such a way that politeness strategies used by subjects in the realization of requests were viewed as two types, positive and negative politeness strategies(Brown & Levinson, 1987). The overall findings of the study showed that two learner groups differed greatly from an English native speaker group in type and frequency of politeness strategies, which indicated that learner groups lacked L2 pragmatic competence in the expression of politeness in requests. It was also found that the ESL learner group was closer to L2 socio-cultural norms of politeness than the EFL learner group though the former showed talk-much behaviors in requests. The EFL learner group showed limitations in type and number of politeness strategies throughout situations, which led them to invest much less amount of politeness than the ESL group, and look impolite or even rude during requests. Some suggestions were given for L2 pragmatic instruction to improve Korean learners’ abilities to express politeness in face-threatening situations.
