국문 초록

본 논문은 영어 원어민들이 다채로운 문맥 속에서 현재완료 시제를 어떻게 사용하는 지를 살펴보았다. 준 예비 연구 (a quasi-pilot study)에서 74명의 한국 EFL 대학생들은 사용하기에 어려운 문법 사항이 무엇인가라는 질문을 받았고, 동사 시제, 그 중에서도 현재완료 시제가 첫째로 꼽혔다. 영어 원어민 화자들의 일상 속에서 자연스럽게 쓰이는 현재완료 시제를 살펴보기 위해서, Ask Amy라고 불리는 상담 기사를 선정하였다. 상담 기사를 선정한 이유 중의 하나는, 이런 양식의 글에서 다양한 동사 시제를 만날 수 있기 때문이다. 본 연구의 4장에서는 주어진 맥락 안에서 적절하게 사용된 현재 완료 시제의 용례들을 소개하고 설명하였다. 이어서 단순 과거 시제로 옮겨서 영어 원어민들이 이 두 시제를 어떤 맥락아래서 구별해서 각각 사용하는지를 살펴보았다. 이 논문이 제시하는 바는, EFL 학습자들이 현재완료 시제의 효과적인 사용법을 배우는데 있어서 상담 기사가 매우 유용한 자료가 될 수 있으며, 이는 나아가 명확한 의사소통을 위해서는 문법이 중추적인 역할을 맡는다는 점이 EFL 환경에서는 강조되어야 한다.

영문 초록

This paper explored how native English speakers used the present perfect tense in a wide array of contexts. A quasi-pilot study asked 74 Korean EFL undergraduate students what grammatical items were difficult for them to use. Verb tenses, particularly the present perfect garnered the most vote. One advice column - Ask Amy - was chosen as authentic, real-world texts in which to see how the present perfect works in native English speakers’ daily lives. A primary reason for choosing advice columns is that they often brim with a variety of verb tenses. Chapter 4 demonstrated how to properly use the present perfect tense in given contexts. It also discussed the uses of the simple past to show when native English speakers choose the tense over the present perfect, highlighting the differences between the two tenses. This study illustrates that advice columns can be an excellent resource for EFL learners to learn how to effectively use the present perfect, thereby helping them realize that grammar plays a pivotal role in saying exactly what they mean.
