국문 초록

이 연구의 목적은 설악산에서 근대적 공간 건설이 어떻게 이루어졌으며, 설악산의 장소성에는 어떤 변화가 있었는지 〈동아일보〉에 대한 내용분석을 통해 알아보는 것이다. 분석기간은 설악산 관련 첫 보도가 나온 1925년부터 박정희 집권 마지막 해인 1979년까지이다. 이 기간을 일제강점기, 국립공원 조성기, 국립공원 운영기등 3시기로 나누어 양적 · 질적 내용분석을 실시했다. 일제강점기는 공간 재현(representations of space)에 대한 보도의 비중이 가장 높았다. 전근대적 설악산은 은둔과 수양의 장소였다면, 일제강점기의 설악산은 탐승의 대상이었다. 국립공원 조성기는 공간적 실천(spatial practice)에 대한 보도의 비중이 급증하고, 재현공간(representational spaces)에 관한 보도가 등장한다. 이 시기에는 수복지구라는 장소성이 새롭게 등장한다. 설악산은 남과 북이 대치하는 장소이면서 관광과 등반의 대상이었다. 국립공원 운영기에는 시찰과 지시를 통해 공간 생산을 진두지휘하는 박정희의 모습이 설악산 보도에 활발하게 등장한다. 희귀동식물 멸종을 비롯해서 관광지 개발의 문제점에 관한 보도가 급증한다. 이 논문의 분석결과는 근대적 공간의 건설로 설악산이 장소성의 상실을 향해 가고 있음을 보여준다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine how the construction of the modern space surrounding Mt. Seorak progressed and what changes occurred in the characteristics of its placeness through a content analysis of Dong-a Il bo. This paper deals with the period from 1925, when the first report on Mt. Seorak was published, to 1979, the last year of former president Park Chung-hee’s regime. This period is divided into three stages: the Japanese colonial period, period of preparation for national park promotion, and running of the national park. The contents of related articles are quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed. During the Japanese colonial period, most reports were on spatial representations. While Mt. Seorak was a place for seclusion and discipline in the pre-modern era, in the Japanese colonial period it was a scenic spot for sightseeing. In the period of preparation for national park promotion, reports on spatial practices rapidly increased and articles on representational space emerged. The new identity of its placeness as a “reclaimed area” was first suggested at this time. Mt. Seorak became the in-between space where the South and North confronted one another; however, at the same time, it was a site for tourism and mountain climbing. During the running of the national park, reports concerning Mt. Seorak actively featured former president Park Chung-hee, who ordered the spatial construction by means of inspections and directions. Problems related to tourism development, including the extinction of rare animals and plants, were increasingly reported during this period. Eventually, this paper shows that the modern spatial construction around Mt. Seorak has, in fact, led to the loss of its placeness.
