2015 영어과 교육과정에 따른 고등학교 「영어권 문화」 교과서의 문화 내용 분석

국문 초록

의사소통을 위해 가장 널리 활발하게 사용되는 세계어로 자리 잡은 영어는 한국에서 제1 외국어로서 학교 교육과정을 통해 교수 학습되고 있다. 우리나라의 학교 영어교육은 1997년 제7차 교육과정이 확립된 이후 수시개정으로 시행되고 있으며, 현재 2018학년부터 2015 영어과 교육과정이 적용되고 있다. 본 연구는 문화를 위주로 집필된 고등학교 「영어권 문화」 과목의 교과서를 문화배경별 및 2015 교육과정의 핵심역량과 소재별로 분석하고, 각 단원별 문화고정란의 체계를 2015 교육과정의 성취기준별로 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 고등학교 「영어권 문화」 과목의 교과서는 내부집단 영어권 내용만을 다루고 있고 영미 문화 소개에 편중되어 있어 영어에 대한 개방성과 언어 혼용성을 배우기 어렵게 구성되어 있다. 또한, 영어과 핵심역량 중 공동체 역량에 관한 내용을 집중적으로 다루고 있으며, 소재 측면에서는 다양한 문화권에 사는 사람들의 일상생활과 변화하는 사회 관련 내용이 많았다. 더하여, 문화고정란의 읽기 후 활동을 성취기준에 따라 분석한 결과 생활양식, 풍습, 사고방식을 파악하는 활동이 많았다. 마지막으로, 단 1종뿐인 고등학교 「영어권 문화」 과목의 교과서를 비교하여 선택할 수 있도록 다양한 교과서가 검인정으로 출판될 필요가 있으며, 문화 간 의사소통능력을 배양하기 위하여 본문에서 영미문화 위주로 기술하더라도 문화고정란 등에서 외부집단 및 확장집단 영어권 문화를 다루어 균형감을 갖출 필요가 있음을 제언으로 덧붙였다.

영문 초록

English, widely used as a global language for communication, is being taught as the first foreign language in Korea across its schools. English education has been based on frequently revised national curricula since the 7th National Curriculum was established in 1997. The 2015 English National Curriculum has been applied in schools since 2018. This study analyzes the high school textbook of the “English-speaking culture” subject on the basis of three criteria: cultural background of main contents, core competency, and content material and achievement standards of 2015 curriculum. The findings show that the textbook of the high school “English-speaking culture” subject deals only with the contents of the inner circle of English, focusing on the British and American cultures, which makes it difficult to learn about the openness to diverse Englishes. In addition, it focuses on learning the community competency among the core competencies of the 2015 English curriculum, and in terms of content, there is a lot on the daily life of people living in various cultures and changing social values. Analyzed according to achievement standards of the 2015 curriculum, the after-reading activities of cultural sections are related to exploring lifestyle, customs, and ways of thinking. Finally, this paper suggests that a variety of textbooks need to be published to allow students to choose among several textbooks of “English-speaking culture” subject, and that even if the main sections deal with British and American culture, its cultural sections need to describe the cultures of outer circle and expanding circle of English.
