국문 초록

목적 본 연구는 한국 사회의 능력주의의 한계를 극복하기 위하여 시민교육의 역할을 모색하는 데 목적이 있다. 방법 이를 위하여 능력주의의 특징과 한계에 대해 관련 문헌자료를 분석한 뒤, 현재 한국 사회에 작동하고 있는 능력주의 문화와 그것이 초래한 교육의 문제와 관련하여 사회 불평등 조장과 개인의 도덕성 훼손, 교육의 도구화를 중심으로 탐색하였다. 이를 토대로 능력주의의 한계를 극복하기 위한 시민교육의 역할을 시민이 지녀야 할 덕성 함양과 관련하여 고찰하였다. 결과 한국 사회에서 능력주의는 과거의 가족 세습에서 벗어나 공정한 경쟁을 위해 요청되는 합리적 이념으로 자리 잡았다. 그러나 능력주의는 능력에 따른 보상의 차등 배분에 대해서 사람들이 합당하다고 인식하도록 만들었고, 개인의 능력을 순전히 자기 노력의 산물로 여기는 의식 확산에도 영향을 미쳤다. 능력주의에 대한 강한 신봉은 사회 불평등 해소에 별다른 도움이 되지 못하며, 사람 사이의 관계성을 해칠 수 있다. 한국 사회에서 능력주의는 야만적인 경쟁을 부추기고, 교육의 본질을 훼손하는 데에도 영향을 끼치고 있다. 결론 학생들은 겸손과 연대 의식을 함양함으로써 능력주의의 한계를 극복하고 공동체에 대해 더 많은 책임감을 느끼며 살아가는 바람직한 시민으로 성장할 수 있다. 학생들이 겸손의 미덕과 타인에 대한 존중의 정서에 기반한 연대 의식을 함양할 수 있도록 이끄는 시민교육이 필요하다.

영문 초록

Objectives The purpose of this study is to explore the role of civic education to overcome the limitations of meritocracy in Korean society. Methods To this end, after analyzing the relevant literature on the characteristics and limitations of meritocracy, in relation to the meritocracy culture currently operating in Korean society and the problems of education it has caused, the promotion of social inequality, the destruction of individual morality, and the instrumentation of education center was explored. Based on this, the role of civic education to overcome the limitations of meritocracy was considered in relation to the cultivation of virtues that citizens should have. Results In Korean society, meritocracy has become a rational ideology required for fair competition, breaking away from family succession in the past. However, meritocracy has made people recognize that the differential distribution of rewards according to ability is reasonable, and has also influenced the spread of consciousness that regards individual abilities as purely the product of one’s own efforts. A strong belief in meritocracy is of little help in resolving social inequality and can harm relationships between people. In Korean society, meritocracy encourages savage competition and has an impact on undermining the essence of education. Conclusions By cultivating humility and solidarity, students can overcome the limitations of meritocracy and grow into desirable citizens who live with a greater sense of responsibility for the community. There is a need for civic education that leads students to cultivate a sense of solidarity based on the virtue of humility and a sense of respect for others.
