한국공포영화의 시대별 괴물캐릭터의 특성 및 의미 분석

국문 초록

본 연구는 한국공포영화의 시대별 괴물캐릭터의 특성과 의미를 분석하여 앞으로 공포영화의 나아갈 방향을 제시하고자 한다. 또한 괴물캐릭터가 반영하는 파토스적 의미에서 한국공포영화를 어떻게 재해석할 수 있는가를 제언하고 있다. 이를 위해 본고에서는 한국공포영화의 흐름을 크게 1980년대와 1990년대를 중심으로 그 이전과 이후로 분류하고 분석하여 다음과 같은 연구 결과물을 도출하였다. 첫째, 1950년대에서 1970년대에 등장하는 한국공포영화 속 괴물캐릭터는 주로 전통적인 민담이나 저널 등을 전통과 한(恨)이라는 정서와 결합하여 표상된다. 당시 괴물캐릭터는 유교사상의 가부장제와 위계질서를 중시하는 계급사회 하에 희생된 여성이 원귀가 되어 괴물로 등장하는데 이는 사회비판적 서사를 영화 수사학으로 상징화한 것이다. 둘째, 1980년대에서 19990년대의 괴물캐릭터는 표현의 자유가 보장되는 시대적 변화와 맞물려 서양의 귀신이 등장한다. 당시의 공포영화는 사회적 불안감을 기물이라는 캐릭터를 통해 투사한 방식이었다. 셋째, 2000년대 이후는 사회 문제에 대한 불안감과 공포를 괴물캐릭터로 대변하였다. 이를 통해 관객과 공감하려는 영화의 로고스와 에토스, 그리고 관객의 파토스가 접목하는 지점이 되었다. 시대의 흐름에 따른 괴물캐릭터는 처음에는 여름에 잠시 더위를 식히고자 하는 목적에서 제작이 되었지만 각 시대마다 사회문제에 대한 불안감을 괴물캐릭터로 상징화하면서 영화관객을 설득하는 깊이가 더 깊어졌음을 알 수 있다. 따라서 향후 공포영화는 현 사회가 가지고 있는 문제에 대한 불안감과 두려움을 사회심리학적인 방향과 영화 수사학적 접근에 초점을 맞추어 제작한다면 한국공포영화가 더욱 더 발전할 수 있을 것이라 진단된다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes the characteristics and meanings of the monster characters in the horror films of Korea, suggesting the direction of horror films in the future, and suggests how to reinterpret Korean horror movies in film, particularly the pathos and meaning that the monster character reflects. For this purpose, this paper classifies and analyzes Korean horror movies before and after the 1980s and 1990s. The monster characters in Korean horror movies that appeared in the 1950s and 1970s are mainly expressed by combining traditional folk tales and legends with the emotion of tradition and Han ( ). At that time, the monster characters appeared as monsters for victimized women under the patriarchal system of the Confucian ideology and the hierarchical order, symbolizing a social critical narrative as film rhetoric. In the 1980s and 1990s, the monster characters appeared as western ghosts in line with the changes of the times, when freedom of expression was guaranteed. The horror movie at the time was a way of projecting social anxiety through the character of a monster. After the 2000s, anxiety and fear about social problems were expressed as monster characters. From this, the logos and ethos were developed to try to empathize with the audience and the audience’s pathos. The character of the monster, according to the flow of the times, was initially developed for the purpose of cooling the heat temporarily in the summer, but it can be understood that the rhetoric was deepened by symbolizing anxiety about social problems in each age with the monster character. Therefore, Korean horror movies can be developed more if horror movies focus on anxiety and fear about the current problems of society, taking a social psychological direction and a rhetorical approach to movies.
