새로 발굴한 여성교훈서 <부인수지(婦人須知)>의 구성과 내용

국문 초록

이 논문은 새롭게 발굴된 여성교훈서 <부인수지>를 소개할 목적으로 작성되었 다. 서책의 크기는 20.2x31.8cm이고 전체는 80면, 매면 10행으로 이루어진 한글 필사본 자료이다. 1841년 화서학파 문인 중암 김평묵에 의하여 규방의 부녀자들을 가르치고 일깨울 목적으로 저술되었으며 1921년에 재필사된 것이다. 서책의 전체적인 구성은 저술 목적을 담은 서문과 부녀자가 지켜야 할 규범들을 13개의 항목으로 나누어 해당 내용을 설명한 본문, 간행 경위 및 저자와 저술 시기, 필사 시기 등을 기록한 발문으로 이루어져 있다. 본문에 담긴 13개의 항목은 순서대로 ‘시부모 섬기기’, ‘남편 섬기기’, ‘부모 섬기기’, ‘형제 간 우애’, ‘친족 간 화목’, ‘자식 가르치기’, ‘손 대접하기’, ‘종 다스리기’, ‘잡술 경계’, ‘제사 받들기’, ‘음식 차리기’, ‘의복 만들기’, ‘말 조심하기’ 등이다. 이 항목들을 다시 내용에 따라 시부모 남편 부모 섬기기, 형제 친족 간에 화목하기, 자식 가르치기 등을 포함한 ‘가문의 결속과 화합을 위한 가족관계 윤리’ 와 손 대접하기, 종 다스리기, 잡술 경계하기, 제사 받들기, 음식 차리기, 의복 만들기 등을 다룬 ‘가사를 주관하는 기능적 여성상’으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 김평묵은 <부인수지> 매 항목의 앞부분에는 경전에 기반 한 통상적인 경계의 말을 담고, 뒷부분에는 ‘요세 부인’, ‘요세 여자’, ‘요세 사람’, ‘요세’와 같이 당대 여인들의 부적절한 행실을 사례로 들어 소개하면서 시집을 중심으로 한 가족관계의 윤리 및 가사 전반에 이르기까지 유교 정신에 입각한 도덕규범을 당대 부녀자들에게 습득시키고자 한 것을 알 수 있었다. <부인수지>는 조선후기 위정척사의 중심인물인 중암 김평묵의 문집에 전하지 않는 새로운 여훈서 자료라는 점에서 의미가 있다. 또한 1841년 저술된 자료가 1921년 근대에 이르기까지 전승 향유되었다는 점도 눈길을 끈다. 마지막으로 <부인수지>는 유교윤리에 입각한 보편적 규범을 제시하면서도 동시에 저술 당시의 부도덕한 여인상을 소개하여 저술 당시의 사회상을 반영하고 있다는 점에서 의미있는 자료라고 생각된다.

영문 초록

This article introduces BooinSooji’, which is a newly developed book for women’s lessons. The size of this book is 20.2x31.8 cm, with 80 pages and 10 lines per page, and it is written in Korean. It was published to teach and enlighten women by Joongam Pyung Mook Kim, who was a scholar of the Hwaseo School, in 1841. Overall organization of the book consists of main body, details of publication, author and time to publish, handwriting time, and so on with 13 items for the norms that women should follow. The 13 items in the main body are ‘serving parents-in-law’, ‘serving husband’, ‘serving parents’, ‘brotherly love among brothers’, ‘harmony among relatives’, ‘teaching children’, ‘treating guests’, ‘treating servants’, ‘warning against witchcraft’, ‘serving ancestral rites’, ‘preparing foods’, ‘making clothes’, and ‘speaking carefully’. These items are grouped into ‘family relationship ethics for and harmony of the family’, including serving parents-in-law, husband, and parents, harmony among relatives and brothers, and teaching children; and ‘functional female role in taking care of the housework’, including treating guests, treating servants, warning against witchcraft, serving ancestral rites, preparing foods, and making clothes. It was known that Pyung Mook Kim tried to teach women the ethical norms of the time based on Confucianism minds regarding the husband’s family, family-oriented relationship ethics, and maintaining the household. This was done with alarming sentences based in the scripture at the start of each item and introducing cases of women’s improper behaviors of the time, such as stories about a modern-day woman’, ‘modernday female’, and ‘modern-day person’ at the end of each item in ‘BooinSooji’. ‘BooinSooji’ holds meaning as a new type of lesson book for women that had not been included in the literature collection of Pyung Mook Kim, who was a main figure of Wejungchuksa in the late Joseon era. It was aso remarkable that the publication in 1841 had been handed down to the modern times in 1921. Lastly, ‘BooinSooji’ is considered to be meaningful literature that demonstrates the social norms at the times of publication by suggesting ordinary expectations based on Confucianism as well as introducing immoral women’s features.
