국문 초록

본 연구는 바이오 아트를 예술과 생물학의 통섭 공간으로서 고찰하기 위해, 바이오 아트의 정체성과 바이오 아트 작품들의 제작 과정을 크레올화의 개념을 통해 살펴본다. 과학사학자 피터 갤리슨(Peter Galison)은 ‘교역 지대(trading zone)’라는 용어를 이질적인 하위문화들을 함께 묶고 있는 경계라고 지칭하고, ‘크레올화(creolization)’를 상이한 두 분야 간의 연결이 새롭게 융합된 학제간 분야를 만들어내는 과정으로 고려한다. 갤리슨의 개념들은 예술과 생물학이 상호작용하는 바이오 아트에도 적용될 수 있다. 바이오 아트는 상이한 분야인 예술과 생물학 사이의 교역 행위를 이끄는 교역 공간이다. 이 교역 지대 안에서, 예술가와 생명과학자는 공유된 맥락을 전제로 그들도 모르는 사이에 서로 다른 목표를 교환하고 역동적으로 상호작용한다. 특히, 〈A Genomic Portrait: Sir John Sulston〉이나 〈The Relative Velocity Inscription Device〉와 같은 바이오 아트 작품들이 제작되는 과정은 교역 지대 안에서 일어나는 합의적 크레올화와 충돌적 크레올화의 단면을 보여준다. 그것은 바이오 아트 자체가 예술과 생물학의 결합을 통한 새로운 학문적 공간에 대한 요구를 충족시켜 나가고 있다는 것을 보여주는 것일 뿐만 아니라 바이오 아트가 갖는 통섭 공간으로서의 위치를 제안하는 것이기도 하다.

영문 초록

This study explores the identity of bio-art and the creation process of bio-artworks through the concept of creolization in order to consider bio-art as the consilience zone of art and biology. The scientific historian Peter Galison refers to the term “trading zone” as the boundary binding together the heterogeneous subcultures and considers “creolization” as the process by which the interaction among different disciplines builds a new interdisciplinary field. Galison’s concepts can be applied to bio art where art and biology interact. Bio-art is a trading zone that leads the trading activities between art and biology. In this trading zone, artists and biological scientists trade their own goals and have a dynamical interaction on the premise of a shared context. In particular, the creation process of bio-artworks such as 〈A Genomic Portrait: Sir John Sulston〉 and 〈The Relative Velocity Inscription Device〉 illustrates the cross-sections of consensual creolization and collisional creolization that occur in the trading zone. This demonstrates that bio-art meets the demand for a new academic space through the combination of art and biology, but also suggests the position of bio-art as the consilience zone.
