‘신체 기억’을 매개로 하는 ‘공통되기’의 활동, 농악

국문 초록

본고는 농악이 집단 구성원들 간의 ‘공통되기’를 이루는 기제로서 ‘신체 기억’을 통해 전승되어 왔다는 점을 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 농악은 공동체가 오랫동안 공들여 기억하고 보존해온 문화적인 공연 양식이다. ‘가정법적’인 시공간 속에서 공동체의 제반의 것들을 ‘반성적(reflexively)’으로 비추어 보는 메타 사회적인 제의(ritual)로서, 농악은 자연적이고 사회적인 전환점에서 행해져 공동체의 허점을 보완하고 활력을 재충전했던 것이다. 이런 중요성 때문에 전통 사회에서 농악은 공동체의 차원에서 망각에 저항하며 잘 기억하여 보존하려고 애썼다. 농악은 언어로 된 대사나 가사가 적고 악기 연주, 춤, 연기 등의 ‘행위’들로 채워져 있다. 전통 사회 농악의 전승주체들에게 문자는 친숙한 매체가 아니었으며 ‘행위’를 문자로 기록하는 데에도 한계가 컸으므로 농악은 문자로 적힌 대본이 없이 전승되었다. 농악의 행위들은 ‘기억’속에만 저장되어 있다가 연행 시에 행위자의 신체를 통해 구현되었다. 신입들은 선임들을 모방함으로써 공연 행위를 신체에 입력하였고 이를 기억으로 저장하였다가 나중에 유의미한 행위로 출력해냈다. 이와 같이 행위를 신체에 저장하여 기억함으로써, 즉 ‘신체 기억’을 통하여 농악은 교육되고 전승되었던 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to reveal the fact that Nongak(traditional Korean music performed by farmers) has been transmitted through ‘body memory’ as a mechanism of group members ‘being in unison’. Nongak is a form of cultural performance that has been memorized and preserved for long earnestly by the community. As a meta-social ritual to look on all things about the community ‘reflexively’ within ‘subjunctive’ time and space, Nongak has been performed at the natural and social breaks to complement what lack in the community and also revitalize it. On account of its importance like that, in our traditional society, people tried to memorize and preserve things about Nongak in the community level resisting their forgetting. Nongak has few lines or lyrics made of words but a lot of ‘behaviors’ like playing a musical instrument, dancing, or acting. In our traditional society, words were not a familiar medium to the transmitters of Nongak, and it was very limited to write about ‘behaviors’ with words. That is why Nongak has been transmitted with no script written by letters. The behaviors of Nongak were stored as a form of ‘memory’ only, and when it was performed, they were realized by the agents’ bodies. The newcomers imitated what the seniors did to enter the performing behaviors into their own body. They were stored in their memory and then later output as meaningful behaviors. In other words, the behaviors were memorized in the body. It means that Nongak has been taught and transmitted through ‘body memory’.
