근대계몽기 석하 김만수의 일기책과 문화 담론

국문 초록

『일기책』은 석하 김만수가 주법공사로 파리에 체류하면서부터 귀국할 때까지 보고 들은 내용을 기록한 사행록이다. 『일기책』의 두드러진 특징은 날짜 표기 방식에 변화가 있다는 점과 일기에 상소문(上疏文)이 섞여 있다는 점이다. 유럽을 벗어나는 관문이라 할 수 있는 오대항을 기점으로 날짜 표기 방식이 양력 중심에서 음력 중심으로 바뀐 것은 동서양의 문화 차이를 인식하고 이를 일기에 반영한 것이라 볼 수 있다. 또한 인천항에 도착한 날 기록한 일기의 내용이 그가 돌아온 지 달포 남짓 지나서 올린 『승정원일기(承政院日記)』에 수록된 상소문과 일치하는 데, 이는 일기를 정리하는 과정에서 병기된 것으로 보인다. 석하는 자신이 일기를 작성하는 목적이 이용후생에 있음을 분명히 밝히고 있다. 『일기책』의 내용을 요약하여 언급하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 정치ㆍ경제 측면에서 전쟁 후의 양상과 갈등, 주법 공관 경비의 어려움과 환율, 각국의 상해(上海) 조계(租界) 설치 등의 문제를 다루고 있다. 둘째, 이용후생과 관련하여 유익개진(有益開進)의 체험학습 박물관, 교통수단, 경기구(輕氣球) 개발을 위한 노력과 지원 등이 담겨 있다. 셋째, 전통ㆍ인물 측면에서는 공원 모습, 혼례를 비롯한 각종 예식, 전쟁 승리의 역사, 종교에 관한 사항 등이 폭넓게 다루어지고 있다. 특히나 『일기책』에는 그 행적이 구체적으로 언급된 세 사람이 있다. 첫째는 주청 프랑스 공사 수행원 비시일, 둘째는 선장 뿌따신시세, 셋째는 러시아 황제에게 동양의 정세를 안내하는 역할을 수행하는 안륵변이다. 이 세 사람의 공통점은 석하에게 국익과 안보의 중요성을 심어주었다는 점이다. 이처럼 석하의 『일기책』은 서구 사회의 정치, 경제, 문화 등 전반에 대한 소개와 더불어 당시의 국내외 정세를 엿볼 수 있는 자료라는 점에서 가치를 지닌다. 하지만 그보다 더 중요한 것은 대다수의 사행록이 문화적 차이를 열거한 데 비해 그의 『일기책』은 당시 대한제국의 관리로서 국익을 우선한 이용후생의 관점과 안보의식이 반영되어 있다는 점이다.

영문 초록

『Book of Journal』 is the record of what Seokha Kim, Man Su saw and heard while staying in Paris as the Ambassador of Korea. The prominent characteristics of 『Book of Journal』 are that he changed the way of indicating the dates and that it included an appeal for the King. The dates changed from the solar calendar to the lunar calendar at the Port of Odae which is the gateway to Europe because he understood the difference in eastern and western cultures and reflected it in his journal. Also, what he recorded on the day of arrival at the Port of Incheon matches the appeal for the King in 『Seungjeongwonilgi』 which he presented to the King about a month after his return. It seems that the appeal was added when the journal was organized. Seokha says clearly that he recorded his 『Book of Journal』 for the benefit of people. The following is the summary of his 『Book of Journal』. First, he discusses post-war circumstances and conflicts, financial difficulties as an ambassador and exchange rates, and foreign settlements in Shanghai, China in terms of politics and economics. Second, he discusses the efforts and supports to develop experiential museums, modes of transportation, and hot air balloons for the benefit of people. Third, he broadly discusses parks, weddings and other ceremonies, history of victory at wars, and religions in terms of tradition and personage. Especially, Seokha s 『Book of Journal』 mentioned the work of three specific people:First, it is Biseil, the bodyguard of the French ambassador in China and the second is captain Putashinsise. And the third is Anreukbyeon who reported to the Emperor of Russia about the political circumstances of Asia. What they have in common is that they enlightened Seokha of the importance of national benefit and security. Like this, Seokha’s 『Book of Journal』 is valuable as it discussed the western societies’ politics, economics, and culture and the political circumstances of Korea and other countries. What is more important, however, is that his 『Book of Journal』 reflects his awareness of public benefit and security as a government official of the Korean Empire, when most other journals simply listed cultural differences.
