국문 초록

2015 개정 영어과 교육과정은 학습자 중심 영어교육을 지향하고 학교 영어교육을 통한 유창한 독자로의 성장을 돕고자 한다. 이에 영어 읽기 수업에서 의미망을 활용한 글 도식화 활동을 수행한 후, 이 책략 훈련이 중학생의 영어 읽기 능력 향상에 미치는 영향을 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 중학교 1학년 학생 108명을 연구대상으로 1주일에 3시간 씩 10차시에 걸쳐 실험 연구하였다. 읽기 전의 의미망 활동은 주제와 단어에 대한 학생들의 지식을 활성화시키고 텍스트 구조를 예측하도록 장려하기 위한 것으로, 이는 이후의 글 도식화 활동을 수행하는 데 도움이 될 것으로 기대되었 다. 실험 연구 결과 의미망을 활용한 글 도식화 읽기 수업은 영어 독해 능력 신장에 통계학적으로 유의한 수준에서 도움이 되는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 또한, 의미망과 글 도식화를 결합한 책략 중심 수업은 학습자들이 텍스트의 모든 단어와 문장을 이해하고자 하던 전통적인 읽기 방법에서 벗어나 효과적인 독해 책략 사용 능력을 갖도록 하는 것에 도움이 되었다.

영문 초록

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the graphic organizing activities with the use of semantic mapping on the English reading comprehension ability of middle school students. The data were collected from 108 1 st year students from D middle school in Seoul who had engaged in semantic mapping activities at the pre-reading stage and graphic organizing activities at the while-reading stage. The semantic mapping activity was designed to encourage them to predict the text structure by activating the students’ knowledge of topics and key words, which would be helpful in the later graphic organizing activity. The result of the study showed that first, the graphic organizing activity with the use of semantic mapping brought a significant difference positively in students English reading comprehension abilities. Second, this strategy-based approach helped the learners engage more in the top-down approach when reading English texts. Finally, this approach also helped learners get out of the old-fashioned reading habit like their endeavor to seize the meanings of every word or sentence in the text. Instead, this approach helped the learners develop a strategic reading habit through the use of strategies like the understanding of the content through the title, key words, inter-sentential relationship, and the organization of the text, which would led them to become competent readers.
