국문 초록

소규모 언어 평가가 교수법 및 학생 학습에 얼마나 유용한지에 대한 지속적인 연구가 있어 왔습니다. 그러나 실제 교실에서 그런 평가가 어떻게 사용되는지에 대해서 연구가 부족하여 더 지속적인 연구가 필요합니다. 사례 연구 접근법을 사용하는 이 연구는 한 강사가 한 미국 대학의 ESL (제 2 외국어로서 영어) 수업에서 자신의 강의를 개선하기 위해서한 학기 동안 대학 영어 배치 (CEPT) 테스트를 어떻게 사용하는지 대한 통찰력을 제공합 니다. 강사는 학과의 지원을 받아서 진단 결과로부터 학생들의 프로필을 정리하는 데 참여 했습니다. 그리고 수집된 데이터에는 강의실 관찰, 인터뷰 및 문서 분석이 포함되었습니 다. 이 연구 결과는 강사가 수업과 커리큘럼을 계획할 때 마주치는 어려움과 학생들의 능력을 평가하는데 있어서의 어려움을 보여주었습니다. 구체적으로는, 강사는 1) 대학 영어 배치 (CEPT) 테스트에서 학생의 강점에 초점을 맞춤으로써 ESL 수업을 계획하는데 도움이 되고, 2) 강사와 학생 간의 의사소통이 교사에게 학생이 진단 피드백을 어떻게 받아들 이는지 또한 학생에게 자신이 특정 레벨의 ESL 수업에 왜 배정 되었는지에 대한 이해를 도와준다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 또한 본 연구에서 그들의 강의를 돕기 위해 영어 배치 테스트를 사용하는 강사를 위한 교육적 시사점과 제안에 대해서 얘기하고 있습니다.

영문 초록

There is continuous research on how small scale language assessments may be useful in teaching and student learning. Yet, there needs to be more research on how such assessments are appropriated in the actual classroom. Using a case study approach, this study provided insight on how one instructor implemented a college English placement (CEPT) test during one academic semester in 2015 (January to May) to inform her teaching in an ESL (English as a Second Language) context in one U.S. university. The instructor received instructional support, and participated in organizing student profiles from the diagnostic results. Observing classrooms, conducting interviews, and analyzing documents constituted the data collection strategies. The findings illustrated the possible struggles the instructor encountered with regards to planning the course and curriculum, and conflicts with the daily decisions in evaluating students’ ability. Specifically, the instructor believed that 1) focus on students’ strengths in the CEPT could better assist in planning ESL courses, and 2) communication between instructor and student helped the instructor better understand how the students’ perceived the diagnostic feedback and their placement in the target ESL class. Pedagogical implications and suggestions for instructors using English placements tests to assist in their teaching are discussed.
