영화를 통한 화용연구의 실증적 접근

국문 초록

Canele과 Swain(1980)에 의하면 문법능력과 화용능력 모두 언어능력에 필요한 능력이라고 주장한다. 전자는 정확한 어휘와 문장을 사용할 할 수 있는 능력을 말하며, 후자는 상황에 따라 적절하게 언어를 사용할 수 있는 능력을 말한다. 최근 의사소통 능력의 향상을 위해, 화용능력에 대한 필요성과　관심이 증가하고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 EFL 환경에서 영화를 통해 대학생들의 화용능력 정도를 알아보고자 한다. 영화와 같은 영상자료의 활용이 화용학습에 적극적으로 추천되어지고, 이에 따른 효과와 방법에 대한 다각도의 연구가 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 그러나 화용인식을 측정하는 과정에서 영상을 사용할 것이란 기대와 달리 영상의 텍스트에만 의존하는 경우가 많다는 점에 착안하여 영상과 텍스트를 통한 화용인식의 차이가 있음을 살펴보 고자 하였다. 본 연구에서는 대학생들의 화용능력이 텍스트만을 제공하였을 때보다 영상을 제공하였을 때 다소 향상됨을 밝혔다. 이를 통해, 한국인 영어학습자의 화용 인식 연구에 있어 텍스트와 영상이 구별되어 활용될 필요가 있음을 제안한다.

영문 초록

Canale & Swain(1980) argue that English as a second language includes not only the grammatical ability to use the correct vocabulary or sentences, but also the ability to use the language appropriately according to the situation, which is defined as pragmatic competence. The purpose of this study is to examine pragmatic development in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) environment, focusing on pragmatic awareness and pragmatic competence those are essential in English communication skills. Before proceeding the study, we examined previous research on interlanguage pragmatics (Kasper, 2001, Bardovi-Harlig, K., & Dörnyei, Z.,1998). We found that there are few empirical approaches to development of L2 pragmatics, while most studies were centered on specific speech acts such as request and rejection. The existing research mainly employed on the written text using elicitation methodologically. To overcome the limitations, we designed the survey based on the spoken language using movie clips. University students in three classes participated in the survey divided into two situations, the first provided with the script and the second with the video. The subjects were asked to recognize the interpretation of the given sentences and identify the speaker’s intention. We conclude that movies can improve EFL students pragmatic understanding. In addition, there should exist meaningful discussions about distinction between spoken and written text to measure pragmatic awareness.
