중장년 여성의 대학원 학습경험 분석

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 인생 재설계를 위해 대학원 과정에 진학한 중장년 여성들의 학습경 험을 탐구하는 것을 연구 목적으로 설정하였다. 이를 위해 2018년 10~11월에 H 대학 원의 상담심리과정에 재학 중인 9명의 중장년 여성을 대상으로 사례연구를 실시하고 질적 자료 분석방법을 적용하였다. 분석 결과, 이들에게 대학원 진학은 ‘제대로 공부’ 하여 학위와 전문성을 확보하기 위한 것으로, 고령사회 대응 및 앞선 생애경험과의 연결, 그리고 학습여건이 충족되어 이루어진 선택의 결과였다. 그러나 대학원 생활은 ‘높은 문턱 넘기’의 과정으로, 이들 대부분은 과중한 학업량과 기초학업의 부족으로 애로를 겪었으나, 대학원의 지원체제는 취약하여 동료와 가족의 비공식적인 지원으로 버텨냈다. 대학원 진학 이후, 이들은 자신의 성장을 체감하고 새로 배운 전문지식을 현장에 적용하여 학업의 효과를 경험하기도 하지만, 장기적인 진로준비는 각자의 몫으로 남아있다. 이러한 결과는 고령화 시대 중장년 학습자의 욕구와 상황을 반영한 고등 수준의 평생학습체제 구축의 필요성을 시사한다.

영문 초록

As the population of Korea is aging rapidly, it is important to design lifelong learning policies that would help middle-aged adults develop their second careers. In this context, this study aims to explore learning experiences of 9 middle-aged women who are enrolled in graduate courses. A case study design is used to gain an in-depth understanding of their experiences. The findings suggest that middle-aged women’s entry into graduate school is a result of complex decision-making processes which are related to their life goals, work experience, family care duty, and etc. The highly motivated and healthy middle-aged women who have time and financial capacity are more likely to focus on their graduate programs. This means that the nine research participants are very lucky ones who were able to meet such restricted conditions. However, lack of graduate school’s systematic support has added to the challenges of these middle-aged students who had to balance family care duty with coursework. Fortunately, most of them have overcome the challenges with the support of their families and colleagues. These results imply that graduate schools should be reformed in a way that they would help middle-aged women pursuit lifelong learning.
