성적 인플레이션 연구: 교사와 학생의 인식 및 성적배분에 대한 규제의 영향을 중심으로

국문 초록

2000년대 이후, 한국 정부는 한국 대학에 성적인플레이션이 존재한다는 인식 하에 대 학 차원의 성적배분규제(상대평가)를 실시하도록 다양한 시책을 마련한 바 있다. 이에 본 연구는 한국 대학에 성적인플레이션이 존재하는지, 또 정부 시책에 따른 성적배분규 제 실시가 대학에서의 성적배분에 어떤 영향을 미쳤으며 과연 그 유효성이 존재하는 것 인지 등을 따져보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본 연구는 성적인플레이션의 존재 여부를 실증 적으로 살피기 위해 성적배분규제 실시 전후 모두 수업에 참여했던 대학생 1600명의 성 적 데이터를 분석하였고, 1208명의 학생·39명의 교사를 대상으로 삼아 성적인플레이션 과 성적 등의 인식에 관한 설문 조사를 실시하여 그 내용을 통계 분석의 자료로 삼았다. 분석의 결과에 따르자면, 대부분의 교사는 성적인플레이션이 존재한다고 답변한 반 면, 학생들은 이에 대해 유보적인 입장을 드러냈다. 하지만, 한국 대학에서 성적이란 온 전히 수강생의 학습 성취도만 따지는 것이 아니라는 것 또한 교수와 학생의 공통된 입 장이다. 이에 따르자면, 핑클마이어의 견해--성적인플레이션은 학생의 평점인상에 상 응하는 학력성취도의 부재--에 입각하여 현재의 성적인플레이션을 설명하고자 하는 것 은, 성적과 성적 인플레이션 등에 여러 차원의 문제와 고민 등이 결부되어 있는 현재 한 국 대학의 상황을 고려하였을 때 매우 일차원적인 해석이라고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study sought to investigate instructors’ and students’ perceptions toward grade inflation and to examine the influence of regulation on grade distributions, and to explore the two stakeholders’ definitions of grades. For the analyses, two sets of questionnaire with rough Likert-scale format were given to 1208 university students and 39 instructors for each. For the purpose of investigating the influence of grade regulation, 1660 student data were statistically analysed. The study outcomes suggest that the majority of instructors perceived the existence of grade inflation while the majority of the students took a neutral position. To the inquiry examining about the impact of regulation on grade distributions, the study found a significant difference in the grades before and after the regulation conditions were implemented. To the last question exploring what grades mean to the instructors and the students, the two stakeholders seemed to exhibit fairly different definitions of grades. Most instructors answered that grades meant hard work and academic achievement whereas the students seemed to have somewhat negative perceptions toward those meanings of grades.
