국문 초록

이 논문의 목적은 윌리엄 포크너의 『소음과 분노』에서 제이슨 컴슨의 유머가 중재로 사용되고 있음을 밝히고, 이러한 유머중재를 통해 제이슨이라는 인물에 대한 새로운 방법의 읽기가 가능함을 시도해보려는 것이다. 유머중재는 의학과 간호학에서 새로운 관심을 받고 있는 분야로서 완치가 어려 운 만성 환자를 위한 일종의 치료법 혹은 전략으로 볼 수 있다. 유머를 이용하여 환자의 고통과 통증 을 완화 혹은 일시적으로 잊게 하는 것이며, 장기적으로는 병에 대처하는 환자의 마음가짐, 혹은 태 도의 변화를 도모할 수 있는 대처기전으로 볼 수 있다. 케이틀린 무어는 제이슨을 마더 콤플렉스를 겪는 만성 환자로 간주한다. 몰락한 가문의 후계자로서 정신적 경제적 부담감에 사로잡힌 제이슨의 속물적이고도 비정한 행동이 그에게 집착하는 어머니와 그로인해 가족으로부터 소외된 그의 정신적 기저형성과 관계있음을 살펴보고, 다음으로 제이슨이 자신의 분노와 스트레스를 해소하기 위해 사용 하고 있는 자학적이고 아이러니한 유머와 독자를 위해 포크너가 시용하는 중재로서의 유머를 살펴본 다. 그리고 이러한 중재 개념이 적용된 유머이해를 통해 새로운 문학적 읽기가 가능함을 증명해보려 고 한다.

영문 초록

The aim of this paper is to examine the relation between humor interventions and Jason Compson’s humor in Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury. Humor interventions have been a new field of interest in medicine and nursing, because they have the function of alleviating the patients’ pain or make them forget the pain temporarily. Furthermore, in the long term, they can be a mechanism because they can change the patients’ attitude to cope with the illness. Therefore, humor interventions are usually used as an effective strategy for the chronic patients in the hospital. Jason in The Sound and the Fury could be regarded as a chronic patient suffering the mother complex according to Kathleen Moore. Jason, who is captivated by the mental and economic burden of being a descendant of a fallen family, is isolated from the other family members due to his mother’s obsession with him. The function and effect of two different kinds of humor in the Jason’s chapter will be examined in detail. One is by Jason and the other is by William Faulkner. Jason uses his humor for himself to express his anger and stress through malicious intentional humor. Faulkner uses his humor as an intervention for readers. Through this study about humor interventions in this Jason’s chapter, I hope I can show a new way of reading and understanding Jason compson differently.
