수능 영어 절대평가 세대 대학생들의 영어 능력 인식, 향상 추구 영역, 교양영어 만족도 및 향후 개편 방안 연구

국문 초록

목적 본 연구는 2018년도 영어 절대평가 시행 후 입학한 대학생들(이하 수능영어 절대평가 세대)이 15주간 영어 교양 교과목 수강후 본인의 영어 능력을 문법, 독해, 말하기, 쓰기, 프레젠테이션 영역으로 세분화 하여(이하 영어능력) (1) 자신의 영어 능력을 현재어떻게 인식하고 있는지(이하 영어 능력 인식), (2) 부족한 역량은 무엇이며 있다면 가장 향상하고 싶은 능력은 무엇인지(이하 영어향상 추구 영역), (3) 영어 교양 교과목 프로그램에 대한 만족도는 어떠한지 (이하 교양영어 만족도), (4) 앞으로 바라는 교양영어프로그램 개편(이하 향후 개편 방안 및 프로그램 제언)은 무엇인지 고찰하는 연구이다. 방법 자료는 서울 S 대학 교양 영어 교과목을 수강하는 총 2개 분반 63명의 15주 차 수업 후 설문 조사를 바탕으로 수집되었다. 무작위 표본으로 선택한 2개 집단은 연구 환경상의 제약으로 자의에 의해 연구자 분반을 교양 필수 혹은 선택 교과로 수강한 학생들이었으며 정규성 검정(NormalQ-Q Plot)실시 및 정규분포를 점검하여 동질집단임을 확인하였다. 결과 학습자들의 영역별 영어 능력 인식은 그리 부정적이지 않았으나 말하기와 쓰기 영역을 향상하기를 원하는 학습자들이 가장많았으며 현재 수강하고 있는 교양필수 프로그램에 대해 낮은 만족도를 보였다. 이에 향후 교양필수 영어 프로그램은 말하기와 쓰기역량을 향상시키는 방향으로 개편되기를 원하였으며, 전공능력을 향상시키는 영어프로그램이 되기를 원하는 요구가 그 다음으로높았다. 결론 본 연구 결과에 따르면 수능 절대평가 세대들은 대학 수준의 영어 역량을 말하기와 쓰기 능력이 우수한 상태로 인식하고 있었으며, 연구 참여자들이 수강하는 현 교양영어 프로그램은 그러한 니즈를 만족시키지 못한다고 여겼다. 본 연구는 미래세대 양성을 준비하여야 하는 대학교육 본연의 목적 달성을 위해 학습자 니즈인 전공 영역을 향상시킬수 있도록 영어 말하기와 쓰기 영역 중심의 프로그램 개발과 교육으로 수요자가 만족하는 교양영어 교육을 제공하자는 의의와 추후 연구의 필요성을 제시한다.

영문 초록

Objectives This study examined the students’ perceptions about English competence, domains to improve, satisfaction with college English program and an reorganization for the future. Methods The research questions were designed to report participants’ perceptions about four categories as follows: (1) how to perceive about their own English competence (2) what English doamin(s) they want to improve, (3) whether they are satisfied with current college English program, and (4) what type of English program would work best for achieving their ideal English performance. A total of 60 research participants who registered two subjects of liberal arts classes in a university located in Seoul completed a perception analysis questionnaire at the fifteenth week of their courses. The normality test verified the homogeneity of variance of these groups. Results The analysis results demonstrated that these participants perceived their English abilities negatively in the domain of speaking, writing, listening, reading and grammar respectivly. They also wanted to improve their abilities of speaking and writing meanwhile they were not satisfied with the current English program provided by their general English education program. As a result, while they wanted to improve their abilites of speaking and writing, they also showed some interests in improving their English ability affiliated with major area. These ideals were revealed through their wishes to be educated from a writing and speaking - centered prospective college English program. Conclusions The findings imply that new-age learners who were admitted from a new college entrance admission process need to be provided with more satisfactory general English education curriculum with students. By doing this, the university administration may successfully meet the needs of college students while assisting students’ needs of improving major-affiliated English abilities and developing teaching and learning program required for the colloege level higher-education. The further studies regarding how to reflect learners' needs as well as to improve their English competence of speaking and writing affiliated with major are sincerely recommended.
