This study aimed to compare and analyze the characteristics of soundscape in community villages with different geographic location and structure, natural and living environment, history, and traditional culture. Additionally, it aimed to examine the importance and effectiveness of soundscape’s way of thinking. The survey was conducted in the inland and coastal areas of Jeonnam province. Nagan-eup and Gangjin Bonghwang Village in Suncheon were selected. These villages preserve the nature, tradition, and historical culture and they have rich soundscape resources. A questionnaire was developed to assess the local residents’ opinions and personal attributes, and to collect information on the soundscape (14 items). Nagan-eupseong (fortress) consists of the main soundscape of the village. The natural environment offers opportunities to listen to the sound of birds and animals. Additionally, residents can listen to traditional music such as Pansori and Gayageum Byeongchang, attend festivals and events such as Doure and Baekjung play, and listen to social sounds related to the traditional culture. In Bonghwang Village, natural sounds of nature and ecology are more prominent than social sounds related to life and traditional culture, such as making pottery. The nature, ecology, history, and tradition of the soundscape resources of the village are connected to the village and they form the identity of the soundscape. In particular, the soundscape resources related to traditional music and Pansori in Nagan-eupseong and Onggi production in Bonghwang village form the independent sound culture of the village. The sounds of Korean traditional music (Pansori, Gayageum byeongchang) or thatch in Naganeupseong, and that of pottery in Bonghwang Village are soundmarks. The villagers perceive that these soundmarks symbolize the village or its culture, and that they have a deep connection with the human cultural life. In addition, a successor or community inherits the function of making traditional Korean music or pottery, which is passed on to future generations. These functions are performed or produced as a living entertainment. The soundscape of the village reflects the natural and ecological environment according to the geographic structure or historical changes that occur in the village, and the socio-cultural value of the community’s lifestyle and activities.
