영문 초록

This study examined the storytelling used in the web novel “Omniscient Reader” to understand its content and meaning. This web novel uses “story” and “probability of story” as probabilities. By accepting and changing numerous stories and laws of stories, a worldview of characters, events, and backgrounds is established. Additionally, the MMORPG setting and enjoying the YouTube platform culture are reproduced in a unique way. In this study, this web novel is used to demonstrate a perspective on the customary nature of the web novel genre and reflection on the function and role of stories. This represents the intertextuality of stories and the typical characteristics of digital storytelling. It also indicates that how stories are enjoyed has changed from “reading and viewing” to “playing” as the enjoyment subjects interact based on the digital web. Additionally, the “Omniscient Reader” reproduces the future society in which the distinction between virtual and reality becomes difficult in the popular imagination. This demonstrates the function of a story that simulates a future society where artificial intelligence and VR technology are developed.
