영문 초록

This study examines the propaganda and agitation patterns of Japanese imperialism evident in military songs recorded by Baek Yeon-Seol, a Korean singer from the Japanese colonial era. During this period, the ultimate goal of Japanese imperialism was to destroy Chosun peoples’ identity, subject them to Japan, and ultimately destroy Chosun completely. In this process, Japanese imperialism chose popular music as a means to brainwash and instigate Chosun people. Music has larger ripple effects as a medium that is delivered through sound. Japanese imperialism enforced record censorship to propagate the wartime system and introduced new patterns through military songs. Initially, military songs tended to be passive and not used for political purposes. However, after the wartime system intensified, they began to be used by the military as propaganda. Baek Yeon-Seol, was one of the first singers to propagate Japanese imperialism. Military songs recorded byBaek Yeong-Seol can be divided into songs related to participating in war as a colonist and songs about the new maternal love forced byJapan. These songs contained Japan’s intention to propagate the wartime system and achieveNaeseon Ilche, or “Korea and Japan are One,” policy. However, while these military songs seemed to represent pro-Japanese activities, they also captured the sorrow of the colonial era. Therefore, military songs can be seen as a resignation toward thecolonial system rather than conformity.
