The L1 Influence on L2 Collocation Learning in a Korean EFL Setting

국문 초록

본 논문의 목적은 제 2언어/외국어의 연어 학습에서 학습자의 모국어가 미치는 영향을 재확인하는데 있다. 연어학습에서 학습자의 외국어 능력에 따라 모국어의 영향이 다르게 나타나는지의 여부를 조사하기 위해 대학에서 영어를 배우고 있는 한국대학생 116명이 본 연구에 참여하였고 이들은 영어 능력에 따라 세 개의 그룹으로 나뉘어졌다. 참가자들에게는 주어진 한국어 연어표현에 해당하는 영어의 연어표현을 선택하는 테스트가 실시되었는데 테스트에 사용된 연어 표현들은 한국어와 영어의 표현이 일치되지 않는 항목들이었다. 본 논문에서 사용된 테스트의 결과 분석은 영어 학습자의 영어 능력에 따라 참가자들의 성취도에는 통계학적으로 의미 있는 차이가 있다는 것을 보여주고 있다. 즉, 학습자의 영어 능력이 높아질수록 그들의 모국어에 대한 의존은 점점 줄어들고 외국어가 가지고 있는 어휘정보에 직접 접근하고 있는 것이 관찰되었다. 그러나 학습자들이 상대적으로 덜 자주 접하게 되는 영어의 연어표현에 대해서는 높은 영어능력을 가진 참가자들도 모국어표현을 그대로 번역한, 잘못된 답을 선택하였다. 따라서 외국어의 연어 학습에서는 학습자의 모국어의 영향 외에도 외국어에 노출되는 빈도가 중요한 역할을 한다는 것을 추정해 볼 수 있다. 이를 바탕으로 한국과 같은 EFL 환경에서 영어를 가르치는 교육자들은 학습자의 영어 연어 학습을 돕기 위해 보다 광범위하게 영어의 연어표현에 노출 될 수 있는 다양한 교수법을 모색하여야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

This study attempts to confirm the influence of learners’ L1 in L2 collocation learning, which was evidenced in earlier studies. In order to determine whether learners L2 proficiency modulates the L1 influence, 116 Korean learners of English from three different English proficiency levels participated in the study. A pen-and-pencil test asking participants to choose the English collocational expressions for the given Korean collocations was conducted, and the questions were made up of incongruent collocations between Korean and English. The results of the present study show that there is a statistically significant difference in participants’ performance according to their L2 proficiency. It can be stated that as learners’ proficiency increases, their reliance on L1 decreases as learners access L2 lexical information directly. However, for some English collocations, which learners seem to encounter comparatively infrequently, even advanced learners chose the direct L1 translation equivalents, which were proven to be the wrong answers. Given this, it can be assumed that the frequency of L2 exposure, in addition to the L1 influence, might be a key factor in L2 collocation learning. Educators, especially in an EFL setting, need to seek out the various methods for providing extensive exposure to L2 collocations.
