근대소설에 나타난 회귀형 여로의 서사 양상 고찰

국문 초록

흔히 ‘길’은 인간의 삶을 담아내는 문학에서 특별한 의미를 가진다. ‘길’은 그 자체로 문학적 주제인 동시에 문학 그 자체의 상징체계란 지위를 지닌다. ‘길’은 소설에서 인물이 지닌 의식의 흐름 내지는 도정을 그대로 드러내며 서사적 형상화의 주요 형식으로 나타난다. 근대소설 속 ‘길’은 주로 인생의 행로로 그려지는 가운데 탐색과 시련의 표상으로 드러난다. 그래서 근대소설의 ‘길’은 세계의 다양성에 대한 공간적 개념을 내포하며, 공간의 이동을 주요하게 표징한다. 본고에서는 근대소설 속에 나타난 여로를 중심으로 서사 양상을 파악하고자 한다. 이에 해당하는 작품은 현진건의 「운수 좋은 날」, 이광수의 『무정』, 박태원의 「소설가 구보씨의 일일」, 염상섭의 「만세전」이다. 서사의 구조상 이 네 작품들은 각각 처음 떠났던 곳으로 다시 돌아오는 회귀형의 여로 구조를 보이고 있다. 현진건의 「운수 좋은 날」과 이광수의 『무정』은 표면적으로는 ‘차이’를 드러내는 서사이지만, 그 구조적 체계를 면밀히 살피면 ‘반복’의 서사구조를 취하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 두 작품은 등장인물이 각각 집에서 집으로, 그리고 조선에서 다시 조선으로 향하는 회귀형 여로를 기본적인 서사구조로 취하고 있으며 동시에 그 안에 담긴 서사 의미마저 ‘반복’의 형태를 지닌다. 그래서 이 두 작품은 ‘반복’을 통한 ‘동일성’ 추구의 서사라 할 수 있다. 박태원의 「소설가 구보씨의 일일」과 염상섭의 「만세전」은 표면적으로는 ‘반복’을 드러내는 서사구조다. 하지만 이와 같은 서사구조에 나타난 서사 의미를 살피면 내재적 차원의 ‘차이’를 주요하게 드러내고 있음을 알 수 있다. 두 작품은 등장인물이 각각 집에서 집으로, 일본에서 다시 일본으로 돌아간다는 회귀형 여로 구조를 지닌다. 하지만 그 안에서 서사적인 ‘차이’를 드러내며 ‘의미화’ 과정이 발생한다.

영문 초록

A road is often described as a symbol of life; it has special meaning in literature that centers on human existence. A road symbolizes both a literary theme and the literature itself, and in a novel it reveals a flow or path of consciousness of the character and appears as the main form of narrative figure of speech. In modern novels, roads appear as symbols of exploration and trials, mainly occurring in the middle of life’s path. Thus, a road in modern novels involves concepts of space in a diverse world and mainly symbolizes movement across space. This paper identifies the journey that appears in modern novels as narrative meaning. The analyzed works are Hyun Jin-geon’s “A Lucky Day,” Yi Kwang-soo’s “Mujong,” Park Tae-won’s “A Day in the Life of Novelist Gubo,” and Yeom Sang-seop’s “Mansejeon.” The four works in the narrative structure show a regression-type journey structure; each returns to the place it originally left. Hyun Jin-geon’s “A Lucky Day” and Yi Kwang-soo’s “Mujong” are narratives that reveal “differences” on the surface, but, looking into the structural system closely, we can recognize that they take on a narrative structure of “repetition.” These two works take on a basic narrative structure of a regression-type journey, wherein each character returns to their house and to Joseon, and, at the same time, takes the form of “repetition,” even within its internal narrative meaning. In this way, the two works can be considered narratives that pursue “equality” through “repetition.” Park Tae-won’s “A Day in the Life of Novelist Gubo” and Yeom Sang- seop’s “Mansejeon” include narrative structures revealing “repetition” on the surface, but, looking into the narrative meaning within the narrative structure, we can recognize that they noticeably reveal “differences.” These two works take the basic narrative structure of a regression- type journey wherein each character returns to their house, and then to Japan, but they reveal a narrative “difference” within, and the process of “sense” appears.
