Recategorization of the Chinese word ‘gēn’ and its Semantic Description

국문 초록

전통적으로 대부분의 중국어 학자들이 중국어 gēn의 품사 분류에 대하여 많은 논의가 이루어진 것은 구조에 따라 서로 상이한 품사를 부여할 수 있었기 때문이다. 우선 [gēn + NP] 구조를 갖는 경우, gēn은 동사로 간주하였고, [gēn + NP + VP]를 갖는 경우 연사, 접속사, 도는 전치사로 분류하였다. 그러나 문법적 기능의 관점에서는 하나의 표현에 다양한 품사를 부여하는 것은 불필요한 일이다. 본고에서는 gēn이 쓰이는 맥락과 전제된 명제의 의미관계를 고려함으로써 문법적 기능에 따라 분류한다면 보다 명료하고 간결하게 통사적 범주와 의미를 기술할 수 있음을 논의하였다. 첫째 [gēn + NP] 구조를 갖는 경우 gēn은 단순동사가 아니라 영어의 [do]이며, 둘째 [gēn + NP + VP] 구조를 갖는 경우 gēn은 조건접속사이며, 셋째 [gēn + NP + VP]를 갖는 [gēn + VP]는 연동사가 아니라 복합동사로서 gēn은 상위문의 동사이고 공기하는 VP는 하위문의 동사임을 논의하였다. 나아가서 gēn은 내용어가 아니라 기능어임을 밝혔고, 마지막으로 gēn의 의미를 고차술어 논리와 λ - 연산자를 도입하여 gēn이 갖는 의미를 형식적으로 기술하였다.

영문 초록

Most of Chinese scholars have debated about the categorization of the Chinese word gēn, because it is believed to be a verb in [gēn + NP] structure, a serial verb, a conjunction, or a preposition in [gēn + NP + VP] structure. However, it is not necessary to classify the word as a different kind of categories in the grammatical function. First, we argue that gēn in [gēn + NP] structure is not a simple verb but a proverb DO in English, and gēn in [gēn + NP + VP] structure is not a simple conjunction or preposition but a sentential connective such as if – then in English when we considered gēn to have a relation with a presupposition or a given context in semantic interpretation. Second, we discuss that gēn in [gēn + NP + VP] structure, which was treated as a serial verb, is a verb in the embedded structure, and the verb in VP is a verb in the embedding structure. Third, we also discuss that gēn works as a functional word, not a content word in any structures. Finally, we formalize the meaning of gēn in the higher–order predicate logic and λ(lambda)-operator.
